Large Scale Central

Virginia City central mountain project

Pretty neat, but I’m guessing that cuts off all that discussion about the switch location and the tunnel. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)

Yeah, bummer Bruce… there was a lot of meat left on that bone, for sure. Maybe you want to do a Zoom-beer meet on the topic? The beer part sounds pretty good…but I still feel we’re missing the boat (HA!) if we don’t bring this topic to the fore.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

And I thought that I over-engineered stuff. Holly Crap Cliffy - This is amazing!!! How long ago did you pour roadbed? I missed that as I haven’t been on MLS in probably 5 years.

Haha, thanks buddy! And, um, yeah, I tend to do that… I haven’t been to MLS much for the same period, but the roadbed got poured back in 2012:

Awesome work. I didnt see the napkin drawing of your plan, though. Points off.

Thanks Bob!

And I’ll get on that napkin pronto. Seems there was a run on them when the TP ran out, haha! (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

I never knew that a napkin was THAT important…(heck, I just used my sleeve(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)) Now there’s points involved as well? Man, I’m betting there goes MY permanent record!

They sure are when you run outta TP. But… that’s not what you meant about your sleeve, right?

Not to mention the entire box of crayons you went thru coming up with that track plan… (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Thanks Chris; I guess Solidworks still seems like Crayola to you Pro-E guys… (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-innocent.gif)

Hey, this is off topic, but speaking about those flats, one of the buildings I’d like to represent is the Savage mansion:

Quite a challenge for a rainy day. Or month. But I mention this because a couple products have caught my eye, which seemed close, but not close enough. However, someone else might be interested in 'em, and I think they’re really cool.

The first is the Piko 62030 Mansion. Pretty neat, but too different for my purposes.

The other one is the out-of-production Playmobil 5300 Victorian Mansion. I can’t verify the scale, but I’m under the impression it’s close. Anyway, these things are rare and expensive (one current EB lot is $800 +$200 shipping, sheesh). But here’s one with a second building, for less than $200 all in. [link] Can’t guarantee the source, buyer beware; but I’d bite, and goo thru the trouble of modifying, if it was a story higher. That’s because PM toys are indestructible: they’ll be cropping out of landfills long after the apes take over.

Anyway, just thought I’d pass these along. And that concludes this hijacking of my thread.

Tomorrow starts a 3-day run at finishing all the mesh for the mountain project, taking care of unknown loose ends as they come up (there’s been a steady stream of those), and generally prepping for my big mortaring gig of 2020.

the scale of the playmobils must be around 1:22.5.

at least their figures and LGB figures are about the same height.

Playmobil stuff is great and have used it for years, just finished a Cracker house for the MIK 2020 challenge and have built a sawmill and freight station with their products and back in the day had a 3 story hotel at the base of Coquina Fall in which I even used their figures. Back in the late 1970 1//2" scale figures were hard to find and being as the hotel was in the middle of the of the layout it was about 25’ to the closest place where you could see it, go tons of comments of where did you get the people. I to am not sure as to the scale but for me it is close enough and very adaptable and usually not too expensive just remember to UV protect it. Check out Eric Mueller’s triple O on this site as he uses figures exclusively with great success. When I built the cracker house it is the first one that I have put window glazing in. Good luck with your build, Billcracker housesawmillhotelplaymobilplaymobil in the gardenfreight depot

wait… you aren’t going to 3D print that mansion?

Wow Cliff sort of jumped the rail, or got off the rail. But that is what makes your threads so fun to follow. Your mountain build thread will be fun to watch.

Very nice work!

Cliff,

PLAYMOBIL looks just fine alongside our trains. We don’t “bash” the buildings as Bill does, but they really make the Triple O come to life when we bring it to full dress. Like Korm mentioned, the figurines look fine alongside the models, too, and they have proven invlauable in setting scenes to help us plan things. Oh, and they are a lot of fun to play with, too… and not just for me!

The picture below doesn’t show the trains, but it’ll give you a sense of a PLAYMOBIL building next to a known entity, the POLA locomotive shed:

Bottom line, if the price is right, I’d swing. These buildings survived me, my brother, and my horde. They will be amongst those artifacts arising from the rubble!

We run 1:24-ish PLAYMOBIL scale, so finer points of scale are not all that important on the Triple O. I can dig through the archives and see if I have a PLAYMOBIL building next to a B’mann 4-6-0 or my LGB mogul if either are closer to your working scale and the photos would better inform you way forward.

Eric

Sorry, duplicate post.

Thanks for all the Playmobil comments & pics Bill & Eric. Jim, I’ll probably do a 2D laser job on that, maybe with 3DP details, we’ll see.

Hi Dennis, thanks, and I’m glad you enjoy my weird rail-hopping threads, haha!

As of today, at long last, the mesh work is about done.

Tomorrow will be finishing up on that, and setting up for mud slinging.

Good news Bruce, that horse ain’t quite dead yet! From that old roadbed photo I posted in response to Jon’s question on when I did it, I realized that I had already accommodated the tunnel-less switch-back problem when I first design the track and laid the concrete roadbed. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Before the tunnel, the mainline came up that center leg, bent east (right) to the “Sub Depot” (as it’s still called), and then switched back up to the mine upper levels (lower left).

After the tunnel, the main line was straightened out, and that center roadbed was abandoned. A new spur served the Sub Depot, and the switchback switch was relocated near the tunnel mouth.

Which means I can take up that center leg and switch… When I designed the track plan, I was being idealistic on putting down ALL trackwork in VC. But that center leg (2nd pic with the X) never existed like that; so I’ll take the track out, but leave the roadbed in case some unsuspecting visitor asks why it’s there, and I’ll be loaded for bear on the answer.

Sorry about the false alarm and red herrings Jim, hope it didn’t keep you up… But thanks for asking about it, you made me think!!
