Large Scale Central

Virginia City central mountain project

Neat. I can relate to the “long story” mistakes. Well, sort of. Most of my mistakes seemed to be a result of “NOT a long story”; of course, I have mastered “idiocy”, that MIGHT explain away SOME of it.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Wait, we’re supposed to be doing design reviews on this thread? Can you please give us better photos to work with? How are we supposed to measure distances?

And this: “squashedly quasi pseudo representation” !!! Sounds vaguely like a MineCraft thing. Is that your new 3D CAD program?

Good progress. Guess work was nice and relaxing then…

i would suggest, that you rip off the mesh of the mountain, to finish the tunnel first.

reasoning:

it is very likely that you will have at least one train with an on-board camera in the near future.

and to rebuild a pic-friendly tunnel interior through the ends only is uncomfortably.

(i have on my desk a mini-camera. a cube of 3/4 inch sidelength. with 32GB storage. sooner or later you’ll have something similar too)

And now for something completely different …

If “Mesh of the Mountain” were the album title, what would the music be?

?

Someone getting gasoline at the general store, "So why is it called Ripping Mesh Mountain? That’s an odd name.

Local geezer doing the gas pumping, “Y’all ain’t from around here, are ya.”

Someone getting gasoline, “Correct, we’re not.”

Local geezer, “Then I guess you ain’t heard what happened to old man Butler and the boys up there one foggy night on the new moon in March, a hundred and fifteen years ago …”

(yes, our creative writers group meets in person once again in the morning …) (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

HAHA! The start of a great story Forrest! I can almost hear banjos in the distance… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

You bet Jim, all rested up after a few days at “the office.” (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)But no, Mine Craft is too much for me; Mine Sweeper is more my speed. And if you want to review the design, sure thing, have at it! All comments welcome. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Korm, your advice sounds very wise. Which, out of tradition, makes it something I’ll be sure to avoid, haha!! (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

More seriously, the mortar work is a big mess coming, and requires a whole different setup. I’m getting all the prep work done before hand, and will do the mortar in a series of weekends. You’re absolutely right, it’s hard to reach in there, especially for the ceiling, but I’ve done it before.

Thanks for reminding me about the camera views. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Today was all conduit work. The EMT (rigid steel tube) forms the sockets for the flat racks. I’ll put the racks up gradually, with the flats; but needed to get all the sockets in now.

The black stuff is plastic flex conduit for the (eventual) wires for each row of flats.

Tomorrow I’ll continue the mesh (“lath”) work.

Thanks for viewing,

Jim, you were supposed to ask why the switch is too close to the tunnel…

Cliff ,

I spent years and years on commercial and industrial construction projects and what you have going here could pass inspection on any one of them(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

way to go, looks great.

Why is the 3 way switch so close to the tunnel?

C’mon are you done yet?

Thanks very much Rick, much obliged!

Close John… The 3-way (on the other end) is right near the tunnel mouth, but there’s no problem there. It’s the 2-way switch that has the issue of being TOO close to the tunnel. Guess why. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Relative to the ages of older Giant Sequoia, yes, I’m done. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Yeah, so why IS that 2 way switch so close to the tunnel? And whattaya gonna doaboutit?

Jim, funny you should ask.

That switch was to a switchback for deliveries to the upper levels of the Hale & Norcross and two other mines. The switchback was there from early on, but the tunnel (which made the big yard to the north possible) came later.

So, a more accurate model would have left room for a loco and a few flats to do the switchback, before hitting the tunnel portal area. That’s what I realized last week, and thought: “Oops.”

My solution: pretend the tunnel came first. That the slow speed with which I do things is a matter of perspective. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

This morning I did final tamping / smoothing of all the dirt. I realized I also needed to put in the foundation of the future passenger station, and the for the steps of the access path near it.

Then I did a couple more panels of mesh, and had to tidy up and move on to other things after that.

That’s about it for this weekend. Hopefully next weekend will be all the remaining mesh, we’ll see.
