Shawns build Challenge 2016 (Old clove Church)

Yesterday I decided to get started on the church. Im doing a compressed down version of the church. I first cut all the pieces that will make up the sides, front and back. I also cut templates for the windows. Im not 100% sure how Im going to do the windows. I might slice strips through the templates to give me the shutter look. I have some styrene strips that I can use as siding for the windows. The plastic should flex enough to give the curves I need for the window tops. Im thinking once painted I should have the look if going by the 10ft rule. Once I get to that point ill have a better idea. I added braces to the corners for extra support when I glue and screw (Shut up Rooster) the pieces together. Then I will add wood siding.

I’ll watch with interest to see how you do the windows…windows are my DOWNFALL as a modeller.

The history of the church is fascinating; thanks for including that. The interior of the church is very elegant and beautiful…clearly Protestant: no Catholic, much less an Italian Catholic like me, would ever design something that uncomplicated and un-baroque, if there is such a word!

OK Shawn I will help.

Looks like you are using coroplastic. Do you have a coro cutter and if not get one now! Michaels has them here (I love Michaels cause when I shop the jewelry section the hot women get chatty with me cause they think I’m gay…gotta love it ) Anyway where was I…Oh yes a coro cutter. Split the centers out of the corrugation like you stated then fan them outward . Next take a utility knife right down the middle making a pair of exterior shutters. I would split them just like the pencil sketch you have in the lower left (front of building) don’t shutter into the arched pediment of the window though because it won’t give you the look you want. If this works you are ahead if it doesn’t then you got the idea from Bruce because he is the one that signed you’re ass not me!

Edit cause you can take the coro cutter and split the centers right out and we all know how good you are at splitting things so give it a go!

Good luck !

I’m more focused on how you are going to do the chandelier myself …(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Thanks Roos. Ill give it a shot.

Joe thanks. I have to admit windows are a bit hard (shut up Rooster) for me. I found the trim is what hides all my mistakes lol…

Well? These Australians make chandeliers…http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-12-Scale-12V-6-Arm-Up-White-Candle-Brass-Chandelier-/150445822352?hash=item2307451190:m:m2cV30DJaYIbVgga2qATcYw

Humm Shawn, With all of Roosters help I thought I’d see more progress here by now. Are you going to make it? Just pretend it’s track work out side…

Haha Randy. I got all the windows complete just need a day off to get some photos. I think once painted and the siding goes up the windows will look even better. Im satisfied with the way they came out.

So far I got the two sides started. The windows came out better then I though, not perfect or not to Rooster standards but i think they will pass once everything is painted. Still a few things I need to add. I used styrene for the trim. I heated the top pieces with a lighter so I can bend it. The one window is off a tad. It was suppose to go on front but I accidentally mixed it in with the others. Hey Im going for the 10ft rule.

You must fix it, with my bad OCD it was the first thing I noticed! I am sitting here twitching at the thought of you leaving it

Now go fix it!

Gah you cant do that to me…Vin. When all done you wont even see it. Im an expert at hidding my many mistakes.

Vincent if his window being off a tad is making you twitch then when you see the front of my build with both door closed and notice that one of the top hinges is lower than the other three by a whole half an inch it will probably cause seizures.

Shawn the secret to a really bad mistake is a really excellent back story. See the original hinge on my door pulled out of the masonry and so in order to repair it they had to lower the hinge down one course of blocks. That’s my story and I am sticking to it.

Self portrait?

Latest update. Siding and trim is complete. Wood is painted. Im going more towards a more rugged backwoods look. This is why I went with just planks for the siding rather then the whats on the original Church. The doors were aso built simple mainly becaise I have no patience to build fancy doors with the trim like on the original (Sorry Rooster) I also put a cross on top rather then that circle thing (I could not get that look no matter how hard I tried). The sign will be painted white, railing will be added and a slate walkway will be put in. Then the most important, the roof and finial touch ups. Then mother nature can do her magic.

Well done (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Looking great Shawn, won’t be long you’ll be passing the hat for a stack of the “Good Book” and a few hymnals to share. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I like that you kept the separate doors to keep the lutherans away from the presbyterians

Well its finished. Not much to see in a build log. I added a slate walkway, lined with the stone tile from Lowes. The foundation also has a row of the same stones. The roof was installed and the leftover roofing is going to be used when the guys have to replace any leaks in the future. I also built a fence using wood posts and brass for railing but the ground was to frozen to sink them in. I also have some grave stones to putout and a few small details to build the scene. I think I got the backwoods feel I was after. Total cost about $3 for the brass rod.

Great build Shawn, How much did that snow texture cost?(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
