Large Scale Central

New car float

If you’ve never spent the time to read Tim Warris layout blog and story of why he created Fast Tracks its a very pleasant read. He did an amazing job building the terminal.

This page is part of the story, and shows how Tim built the complex track. [The same technique would work in G scale.] Fascinating. He used continuous raails and notched them where they crossed. The electrical issues must have been horrendous, if he really does use track power. In large scale I would stick to battery!

Here’s a shot from the page:

That Bronx Terminal is fascinating! The whole thing is so unusual. I’ve never even heard of a warehouse built roundhouse-style until now. And then there’s the tight double ring of tracks around it, and all those super-short stub tracks! It would make a great mini-layout.

Exactly. The track plan is a really neat puzzle. All cars come in and out of the car float. They need to be stored until they can be unloaded at one of the doors of the warehouse. The warehouse doors are optimized for 40 foot cars, and you shouldnt move a car in the process of being unloaded. I can see ‘timers’ on cars once you spot them to be unloaded.

If you wanted to, you could model the industries off the left side, too, along the Mott Haven canal.

I beleive the 3 front tracks along the waterfront with a crane over them were a later addition, as was the adjacent yard along the canal. Note that those tracks are inaccessible unless you have the lead track crossing the road.

You could have some great “timesaver” type of stuff going on in a small space.

What a nice thing for shows.

I managed to find that place on GoogleEarth and what it looks like today. The yellow trucks are sitting where the round freighthouse was located.

School busses maybe …

According to the street view, that’s exactly what they are, Sean.

Yep, that’s the place. There are very few vestiges of most of these mini railroads left. Mostly rotting piers and float bridges sinking into the mud.
