Tank Car Run

Finished up my last New Bright Tank car that I put Kadees and metal wheels on. I like the size of them, fits in with my 50’s time better, I think. This makes 10, I think that is it!

Nice time getting tanked!!!

Looks good Jerry

Looking good.
I think 10 is a good number but 12 would be even better! chuckle…

I have about that many sitting in the garage waiting on Kadees also. Did you do body mounts Jerry?

Greg

Nice looking train, Jerry.
When I was a kid, we use to see long tank car trains going back East thru Sacramento, Ca. coming from Bakersfield, Ca.

Greg,

I used Kadee 821’s, shave the walkway in front down thin and a washer on the trucks. I did discover you can cut the New Bright trucks some, for the wheels to clear, then re-enforce them some and use 1/32nd size wheels. No washer needed, if you use them.

Jerry, tank train looks good, however, with that locomotive, the tankers almost look like small beer-can tankers…

Tanks do come in many sizes though

Mark, I know they do… My comment wasn’t a complaint nor meant derogatory, just a statement of my observation…

Those new bright are pretty much 1:32 I would guess by looking.

Greg

p.s. I took andy’s statement as an observation, especially since he did a smiley… that’s the kind of “key” I use to not decoding statements wrong.

Those tanks could run at any of the normal scales, with minor modifications though, changing trucks, ladders and adjusting the capacity numbers for the scale shouldn’t be that hard…

I got the smiley face btw, no need to edit your post and make it snobbish

I like the size of them, about 1/32. I can have a longer train that still fits on my short line. I still see different size tank cars on the UP line near my house. The locomotive in the picture is my MTH Hudson, which is 1/32.

Jerry, just remember with the recent “sweet” crude oil accidents, reduce the speed of your train, and go extra slow thru town!!

Mark, not snobbish… your reaction was felt by Andy, I was just reinforcing that I read his post as intended.

If you want to have an adjective, then make it “instructive”, or “informative”, that was how it was meant.

(of course I could make pedantic comment about understanding the meaning of snobbish  )

To be clear, I just made a self-depecating joke…

Greg

Here’s some pix of the New Bright frame/truck mods.

Above is the notche I cut in the front of the frame. Leaving the textured strip.

Frame, showing the cuts on the end of the center beam. Kadee 821’s used.

Mods made to the New Bright trucks. I drilled out the axle holes a little and cut as shown. Works fine and looks okay from 10’!

Wow, what a difference in wheel diameter (and how wide can you make the wheel tread?).

Now I understand why notching the bolster…

Whose metal wheels are those?

Greg

Greg,

They are Great Trains wheels, pretty fine scale but work okay. 1.12" in diameter. Roll real good in those New Bright trucks.

I’d think you might have issues with some switch frogs, like Aristo.

They DO look good though!

Greg

I have SVRR code 250 switches and they do okay, just have to make sure the axles are in gauge
