Large Scale Central

Shannon Car Shops 2019 build

Ok, after taking my Jeep in for repairs, getting a rental car, driving to a closed KMart (it was open last week) ordering some pants from KMart online, doing a few honey doos and taking a short nap, I finally got restarted on the build.

I will need a small engine service facility, and hopefully a turntable and roundhouse on my HO module.

You can see the unused stub for the track leading to the facility that will occupy the empty space.

First I cut the top and bottom disks for the tank, as well as some rectangular spacers to put between the disks.

To cut the tapered staves I drew two arcs, one for the 10 foot diameter top disk, and one for the 12 foot diameter bottom disk and then drew lines from the center point through the arcs. This gives me the size of the stave on the top and bottom.

After building the core

I started gluing on the staves.

I check the staves for vertical with a square as I go. The first 4 went on as planned, but as I went out from there, I found that I started drifting away from the vertical. So I have added staves that weren’t tapered and adjusted the taper a bit on others. In HO scale the margin for error is much smaller then the scale I normally model in (1:24).

It’s so small. How do.you see it.

I take off my glasses. But that is one reason I like large scale, I can see it. HO is a bit tough on my eyes.

Not as much progress as I had hoped. So what else is new?

Hard to see in the pictures; but how did the taper work out. It looks good. Did you get the taper you were hoping for?

Yes the tank has the taper I wanted. It would have been nice if the staves had come out a bit more even. I think it will look fine with a coat of paint. So it has been decided that it will get a nice coat of yellow paint.

Nice looking tank, David. You did a good job on the taper, considering the size.

You guys, all hung up on size, like it actually matters. (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)(https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

Size has nev… never mind (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif).

Clever. I bet we could “up scale” this technique a bit for the Triple O.

Sure. I learned in HO, and then went to N, then to 1:48, then to large scale. Sticks and glue work about the same, no matter what scale you tell them they are.

Well, I hope to get back to work on the tank soon. Right now my mom is sleeping off her respiratory infection on the couch. So I cant work in the living room. and my workshop is too cold and cluttered to work there. So I have been out of action for 2 days now.

Time to do a bit more research online
