Mueller Mini-Mik

Update:

Younger Daughter declared here project pau (done). Kid-zilla says he has more to do, but has yet to enunciate his plans. The other two forged ahead (photo from yesterday’s session):

Oldest Son cotinued tinkering on his power plant for the wagon. The original travois was made from composite scraps from last year’s bridge project. He found now as I did then, the material loses strength below 1/2" x 1/2", so he build the following from wood:

Some testing with batteries showed him what he’ll need to order, and he had to figure out how much weight he will need to counterbalance the motor. He also found the axel spins inside the hollow wheel sets! He pried them apart, dropped in some CA glue, and, by golly, it work. Barely. Of course, it need only advance at the pace of a maniple marching in battle formation, so slow is OK. I told him he doesn’t have to have it operating, as I need to order the battery clip.

OD, meanwhile, taking advantage of the delay in the start of schools made a bit of progress. First, she saw if a little shack my father-in-law made (he made one for each kid to decorate and put on the railroad) suite her purposes:

She opted instead to build a lowside gondola, and, after cutting the parts, things look like this:

She says she is trying to be a little more whimsical than our cane cars but without sacrificing the fun.

School will now not start until September and they reclosed the beaches and parks. With at least two kids still interested in the project, I may hold the deadline open for them.

The final push is on…

I warned everyone last week, with virtual school in full session, that today, Sunday, 30 August 2020 at bedtime all paints and glues and saws had to be put down. This actually drove progress, as each sibling began to realize the other might just eke them out!

Kid-zilla, with some help, added truss rods to his lounge chair / gondola:

All suggestions some paint would be nice went, for the moment, unheeded…

Oldest Son continued to tinker with motorizing the assault wagon:

Despite the banana sticker on his forehead, he couldn’t quite get this to work again. The original motor burnt out (shock), and I assured him that he had gotten this thing to move under its own power once, which was good enough for the contest.

Youngest Daughter, who has pronounced herself pau (finished) on multiple occassions turned her creativity loose on the details of her “birthday coach.” A member of the 1:24 scale crew tests out a chair made of a bottle cap, scrap cloth, and bits of shiskabob skewers:

I think she has the best eye for seeing treasure in junk of any of us! The sculptamold lumps below, I a told, are to become cakes:

There are allegedly balloons in her craft pile, too…

OD, true to form decided to come off the bench for a last minute drive at victory. As her sister decorated, OD wen to work mounting vertical posts into the corners of her rolling garden center:

To these she affixed shiskabob skewers with TiteBond III (The preferred tool of the Mueller family!):

This being a “Mik” style challenge, today the whole crew went at it in a last minute sprint to get things done. Kid-zilla finally decided to paint his creation…

…probably because he saw his brother had come to the same last minute decision:

I decided his shirt, which features the Galloping Geese, did not also need a coat of black acrylic paint.

Their sisters were working in secret. OD have been crafting potted plants…

…while Youngest Daughter was working magic with trash, converting some into a two story “Barbie House” and others into bits for this contest. OD has been stringing chains and vines, but, for reasons unclear, I cannot get a link to embed the photo of her in the midst of a 1:24 scale “all-nighter.” Someone better figure out time management before someone asks for college money!

Tomorrow, after “school,” our intrepid contestants will each get to stage his / her creation on the Triple O for the judges’ pictures. We are still arguing about who will serve as judges. The kids are calling for the LSC community. The photos will go here, regardless, to bring this thread to its close!

Thanks for following along!

Eric

Awesome stuff.

your parts box is still paying dividends):

LOL…how many cars have you made from that ?

Rooster:

To date

  • 5x cane cars
  • 3x “mini-Mik” creations
  • 1x catapult for Legio X (emphatically NOT for the railroad, per its creator)

So, eight pieces of rolling stock and one iron ages siege engine.

After I get the mill done, I foresee a field tender for Komakaiki and a small water car for the cane workers and possibly a tanker for molasses (which will, of course, drive a need for a distillery…). I may “cheat” and try commercial journals on the next flight. Regardless, there’s plenty of gold in that-there “junk.” The crew knows its there for the asking if they have a project.

Eric

Edited for spelling.

LO!!! The Mueller Mini-Mik 2020 comes to a conclusion! As a reminder, each participant began with a home-made kit based on our sugar can car design. Finished products had to conform to the exacting standards of 1:24-ish PLAYMOBIL scale and actually be stable in tow behind a train.

To begin with, all participants passed the high design standards. Though taken after the “glamor shots,” I present the field test first to introduce the Triple O’s latest rolling stock:

Video: Diesel Dan Parades the 2020 Mueller Mini-Mik creations

And, in the event the video fails:

Our contestants were each allowed to stage and take three photos. We’ll work left to right based on the picture above…

Entry #1: Roman Assault Wagon (by Oldest Son)

This “timber clad” draws inspiration from the Trojan horse and features lunch counters to make it appear an innocuous lunch wagon. Firing loupes allow for ranged weaponry of any epoch, and the tin roof pops open for siege artillery or a maniple of pila-tossing legionnaires. Oldest Son points out the platform did actually push this thing along at a steady marching pace. I promised him he would not be penalized because Dad wanted to wait to place the parts order to save on shipping.

Entry #2: Birthday Coach (by Youngest Daughter)

Rides can enjoy their big day under a hand sewn canopy, riding in the open air on seats made of cloth-covered bottle caps and a custom table made of a bottlecap, skewers, and cloth. YD crafted the chocolate cake from sculptamold, the balloons from pipecleaners and “poof balls,” and trimmed the car and safety rails with beads. YD told me I have to figure a way to couple her coach to the Oma Bea-liner to allow future parties to enjoy this charming bit of motive power… My bad.

Entry #3: Rolling Garden Store (by Oldest Daughter)

Normally, I would let OD write here own entry. To be fair to her siblings, she must suffer with my prose, too! OD sought to strike a balance between whimsy and realism with her open topped garden center. The plants sit in home made pots of various materials. The plants themselves are real leaves cut to shape, fashioned bits of paper, and feathers, among other things. Safety chains keep the sales crew and their wares from bouncing out the ends. OD points out that she did this at the last minute, because the pressure spurred creativity and the deadline gave her an excuse to sequester herself with her craft supplies. Kiwi - looking irked by his leash - and Fiery Elias prepare to set out on a sales mission after coupling up!

Entry #4: Rolling Lounge Chair Combine (by Kid-zilla)

At various times, this has been a coach, a gondola, a caboose, and a fire truck. Regardless of its classification, the First Responders of the the Triple O seem to appreciate the rustic, shaded comfort of the vehicle as they relax on the way home from a job behind the ever faithful Diesel Dan! The roof appears more comfortable to Kiwi than that of a steam tram…

And now…YOU GET TO VOTE!!!

After much discussion over two nights, the crew decided that the grandparents, cousins, etc. would not render fair votes, and, my protestations to the contrary, deemed the LSC community fairer arbiters of craftsmanship. All votes must be in by mindnight(ish), Friday, 4 September 2020, Hawaii Time. I’ll tally them like the MIK:

  • 4 points for a first place
  • 3 points for a second place
  • 2 points for a third place
  • 1 point for a fourth place

Because I enjoy being married, all votes are subject to nullification by CINCHOUSE. There is PLAYMOBIL on the line here, folks, for the winner (OD asked for something of equivalent value for her new garden project), and, of course, bragging rights.

Thanks in advance for letting me use this forum as a venue to keep the crew involved in something creative this summer. They do get a kick out seeing their work on-line, and, yes, I do enjoy the “proud parent” moments along the way.

Aloha,

Eric

(Ken - there are 4 entries. Which one didn’t get a thumbs up?)

I give all of them 4 points - all spectacular and a credit to the railroad.

Love them all but cannot vote as I’m affiliated with the projects so my vote is for all!

Outstanding work Mueller Clan !!

Like the rest I give each 4 points. All the individual talent displayed is fantastic. What a collection of memories they’ll all have.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

How can you not like them all !

Does the Cockatiel get to vote ?

OK this is fabulous. And like everybody else, I’m gonna chicken out and give 4 points to all. I think this means you owe each of them the first place prize, right?

Eric, I tried to rank them just because you guys wanted it, but naahhhh, no way, there’s to many great things happening with each one!!

How long did the bird stay strapped to that car? Just curious!

Just to be different though, I’m awarding them all 5 points, HAHAHA!!

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/albums/hh58/rgseng/.highres/thumbsup_zpszula6xpl.jpg)(https://hosting.photobucket.com/albums/hh58/rgseng/.highres/thumbsup_zpszula6xpl.jpg)(https://hosting.photobucket.com/albums/hh58/rgseng/.highres/thumbsup_zpszula6xpl.jpg)(https://hosting.photobucket.com/albums/hh58/rgseng/.highres/thumbsup_zpszula6xpl.jpg)(https://hosting.photobucket.com/albums/hh58/rgseng/.highres/thumbsup_zpszula6xpl.jpg)

I’m pretty sure I can’t figure out how the voting is supposed to work so I’ll just say that I think each entry is just amazing in its own right. I think you’ve done a wonderful job at getting, and keeping, your kids engaged. Did you include a provision for a tie in your rules? (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Everyone’s modeling skills are different and we model to a degree that suits us and makes us feel good about what we do. G Scaler’s probably have a larger range of modelers then most other scales, we model all the way from rivet counters to whimsical and I have to say me being somewhere in between, I give each person credit for what they do. True some are not so much to my liking for one reason, or another, but I always remember it’s way that that railroad modeler builds his, or her layout within their skills and I give them credit for doing what they do. I personally am not a fan of contest, there are always going to be winners and looser’s and for our forum I feel it does just fine with us posting our modeling effort and getting a reaction for the other former’s with there likes about what we do, that’s good enough for me. So for myself I would not vote in a contest, but if you build a model and it catches my eye I will surly let you know what I think about it.

Ha!!

Probably too “tie” the wallet down …for all the first place awards !

Remember you asked Eric!

Thanks everyone for your kind comments! I have passed them along, and, yes CINCHOUSE will either have to declare a winner or allow me to exercise the “tie clause!” I really, really do appreciate the ability to use the forum as a tool to keep the crew interested in the hobby specifically and in creating and doing in general! Maybe next year a secessionist amongst them will make a solo run at the 2021 Mik Challenge.

The cockatiel, Kiwi, has expressed no desire to vote. He needs to stop hopping off trains half way round the garden, anyway! He could learn from Bubbles the Guinea Pig, who will happily laze in a gondola all afternoon if we let her. Lucky Bubbles.
