Fine pictures Daniel. You guys Stateside do have some fabulous coloured birds. We have a lot of birds around my gardens but they tend to be plain in appearance. I have a friend in Wisconsin; he has those lovely Cardinals in his back yard.
Nice shots! We don’t get them in the East, although we are apparently on the Fall Migration route, although I can’t imagine where they come from!

We also get these. Halloween-colored birds. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
This morning there was a big turkey buzzard perched in the tree above a squirrel hole and my wife got lots of pics. (I’m not going to comment on the fate of the squirrel. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-innocent.gif)) Those buzzards are HUGE!

Seems an odd thing to say on a thread that is about the use of a camera catching wildlife in it’s natural surrounds, not a guide book for hunters.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
Dave (Hollywood), you know me. You know that I am half a bubble (or more) off level. You know I have an “offbeat” sense of humor.

Not exactly in its natural surroundings, but wildlife photography none the less (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif). And yes, it was delicious (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

I agree! I think my line would have been better;
Once we stopped eating them, we do.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
Who is eating whom???
Lookie what I got!
Hmmm, fresh squirrel.
Hmmm! Do I detect a hint of German seasoning???
I thought that seemed a bit easy. Oh well, circle of life and all.

There is a road that I drive on most mornings on my way to work, where them darn things like to fly over. They launch off the hillside to fly over the road, but even so, I fear that one of them may come crashing down into the van as I am driving by. They are such ungainly flyers… (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Highway 76 just west of Lake Henshaw just outside of San Diego. They scare the ---- out of you when they come across the road and nearly hit the windshield!
Can this bird be identified?
It’s head seems to resemble the White-crowned Sparrow shown in prior post.
I took the pictures through a screened window, so they are poor quality.
Watching the bird house over several weeks, I noticed what must be the male and female nearby take turns flying in & out of that small hole at a good speed! Amazing how they can target that small hole at a distance at such a speed.
Eventually, no more activity as the hatchlings must have fledged when I was not there to see.
Thank you,
-Ted
Neat bird, but I don’t see the white on the top of the head that would point to the white crowned sparrow.
Could it be a black-capped Chickadee? They are usually farther north, but maybe they’re making it down to San Mateo this year?
Great shots Daniel and others. I think most of us enjoy watching birds. I put out seed cakes and in season the Hummingbird feeders.
Here on Cape Cod we get a pretty good variety of birds that migrate through the area. The other day we had a visiting Oriole. We also get wild turkeys, crows, red tailed hawks and one night I startled a owl that was busy dissecting a rabbit. It flew off with the lower half and came back later for the upper.
I made a video in 2015 of photos of the different birds that visited my deck. The mystery bird in it turned out to be a Nuthatch.
Nice pictures, Todd.
A nit: I’ve always seen it spelled Junco (no K). While you correctly identified Mystery Bird as a nuthatch, his “full name” is White-Breasted Nuthatch. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)You MAY also see the Red-breasted Nuthatch in your area.
