EVERYONE…

I offer a toast to our friend Bruce Chandler, a FRIEND, AN ARTIST, A CRAFTSMAN, A Large scale Model Railroader, and a very GENEROUS, great person, we all have the pleasure of knowing; some in person, and others through the LSC forums, and chat.

Bruce has shared with all of us the opportunity to learn, and share with him, the great hobby of LS Model Railroading, also as a writer, and contributor to Garden Railways Magazine.

The second and most important Toast, is to his, and Jean’s good health and happiness in the future. I’m sure we won’t loose him as an online friend for many years in the future…

GENTLEMEN , and LADIES…a TOAST……

Please add you contributions, if you care to…

I acknowledge that any toast is much more personal, if given in person; but due to the trying times we all are going through; online is the only way we all can take part.

So; I thank Bob McCown for the use of his “Living Room” on this special occasion.

Oh how I wish that I could get a building shipped to me, the Mattersons(?) storage facility is one i would love to

have. Oh well sad to see it go but will be looking for boxcars one pics and videos wherever they are in exchange service.

Pete; I think that was “Matheson’s Storage”. Bruce named it after a friend, Doug Matheson. Yes, another of Bruce’s works of art.

Yep, that was Matheson’s Textiles

Thanks for all the nice comments folks, and I’m sorry that not everybody could get what they wanted, nor even a visit for many of you. I had a lot of fun building everything and almost as much fun giving it all away!

It will be interesting seeing them in place in different venues !

I am sad to see the railroad go but I can relate . Trimming 400 dwarf Alberta Spruce trees every year is getting old after 16 years .

What ?

Lou must be a Garden Railways subscriber. I had an article published in the Summer 2020 issue.

Ya I saw it … (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)Can I have your autograph … (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Sad to see this Bruce, but happy I did get to see it in person (even if it was In pouring rain!)
But maintenance on garden railroads is a must and if you don’t keep up with it it quickly gets out of hand.

We have spent the last four years enjoying our new hobby (camping) but we have maintained our railway (kind of have to as we have fish living in our pond) and we actually have it running again this season seeing how all other activities are on hold in the new world.

You can always just run over to Ken’s and run there!

He signed Rooster’s ass that year at ECLSTS. We all got pictures.

I was one of the “somebodies” blessed by this “opportunity” of Bruce’s massive generosity.

Of the items I obtained, I’m probably most pleased with his lot of workshop materials. In reviewing those items, including molds, armatures and masters among the commercial products, I’m consistently reminded of the man who poured himself into this hobby, and gave back in so many ways.

For example, Bruce’s articles. Don’t let his humility fool you, he’s written gobs of them for GR, and even other magazines.

Not easy to find the words here. But thanks again Bruce.

Well…that was one “crazy” session, that’s for sure - rain and I had terminal embarrassment for so many track problems.

Crap, you’re starting to sound like an old man…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Bruce,

Sad to see your railroad go to abandonment. Do you think that if you had raised the railroad it would have made maintenance easier? It was fun following along with your various projects over the years. This is one of the few times that I’m a ‘kid’ on the forum only being in my mid 30’s… Hopefully I will have 30+ years of playing trains before I get to old.

Craig

Craig, you have a good point. About half of Bruce’s layout was raised, the other half was on the ground. I think the real issue was the amount of use it got Vs the maintenance needed to keep or get it functional.

My layout starts out raised as it follows a raised patio/walkway before it turns left toward the front yard. I’ve had many thoughts of turning right and adding a raised extension into the back yard on benches the same height as the wall. My problem is that the back yard slopes down quite sharply so I can only get about 10 feet into it before I am at shoulder height. As it gets more and more difficult to maintain the track on the ground I may end up lifting the track and figure out something that will work raised in the back yard.

I have a similar problem, half raised, half on the ground. I’m not sure what course I’m going to take.

It all made sense, twenty years ago. Now, not so much.
