Train wheels part 1 Windy Hill Foundry

While I was looking at videos of casting various metals in fire ant nests YouTube reminded me that I’m also in to model trains.

This is part 1 on a set of small scale train wheels.

‘Small’ looks about 5 inch diameter, or so.

Nice “ride-on” scales wheels. Looks like the wheels I’m now turning for my 1-1/2 inch scale Super Huskie.

That’s a 5 inch diameter, 3-jaw chuck in my lathe. For size comparison. These particular wheel castings are from Railroad Supply Corp. in Nashua, New Hampshire. The castings are actually used as the wheels on RRSC 6-wheel Buckeye trucks for their 1/8th scale streamline passenger cars. They finish out at a scale 36 inch wheel which is 4-1/2 inches at the tire/tread and a total diameter of 4-7/8 did. at the flange. BTW, this is probably the best quality cast iron I’ve ever cut in this hobby. $12.50 each as a rough casting.
