I finally broke down and started weathering the CSXsd40-2. For whatever reason, it bothered me that it looked so…not realistic. I am not good at weathering, but figured I’d give it a shot. Also, when I started this I may have had a few adult beverages. lol.

So, here we are. The trucks, fuel tank, and bottom of the body got some weathering. The fuel tank still isn’t done yet.

Here are the pictures from the next day. I took the hand rails off, it made for easier weathering. The pictures make the sides look light, but they are darker in person. I think I will leave them as is. I still want to work on the fuel tank on this side. Once that’s done I’ll work my way around. I’m out of supplies, so it will be a while before there is another update.

I think you’re off to a great start Matt. Looking forward to more photos.

Looks like a good start to my eyes! The rust looks great, and the dark wash on the hood brings out the details nicely. You using an acrylic wash for that? If so, don’t be afraid to do the windows as well. (I noticed you masked them.) I “wash” my windows with dilute acrylic paint, then go in with a Q-tip to clean them after it’s had a chance to dry a bit. It gives the windows a clean but filmy-in-the-corners look.

Thanks Kevin. The wash is actually weathering powders. I mixed some grimey gray an water together. Then “painted” the entire side of the body. It looks scary. Then I used a damp paper towel and wiped off the “paint” until I got the look I was wanting.
