Got one side semi mocked up and making decent progress.
Decent indeed :)

Is it done yet???

Got the other side mocked up today. For Hollywood and Ralph’s sake I’ll put the two sides in a row so they don’t have a fit. I’m thinking of another plan for the trucks as I’m not really diggin’ the results I’m getting so far.

ok, why does the 1st and 3rd picture make it look like the car is warped??? the second picture looks ok…

Is it done yet???

Don’y know Andy??? Maybe because the boy is warped???

I was trying to figure out why 3 sides?
edit cause I still want to know what the finish is cause it matches the trucks pretty well ?

It is distortion from being near to edge of lens.

Huuum I was gonna say that the 40 was built with the same bow too :)

Its not the train thhats warped because the track has the same. Must be the camera angle and all those staright lines below the train. Unless the track is warped making the train look that way.

Good luck, Son…

Thanks Dad! As Forrest called it already I’m playing with the camera settings …actually I’m making them with an intentional upward bow!

Got the roof finished this evening and before anyone asks I changed the light angle on the 2nd shot but here’s some updated pics and hope to make some progress this weekend and possibly start on car #2 as well while I try and figure out certain details that will be added to all the cars.

Why, ya gonna ride em :D Ralph

Nice roof  These are gonna be cool.

coming along nicely Rooster. Great work

Nice job so far.

This first car is a Superliner II coach right? I say Superliner II because of what appears to be a three panel roof.

Hey Matt,
Glad you chimed in as resident expert on these things IMO. I thought the only exterior difference was the trucks themselves(without getting into minor details). I did the 3 panels as that was the only roof shot I could clearly make out. As stated I acquired the HO drawings of the I’s but any additional information you would like to share would be greatly appreciated! I build off the cuff and ain’t no rivet counter, just going for the general look without minor details that just get knocked off in the garden anyway?

This is really coming along nicely!

Ah, don’t worry about the roof. I’m probably the only weirdo who’d ever notice it. Noticeable exterior differences between a Superliner I and II include: The trucks Superliner I on top, Superliner II on bottom:

Superliner I’s actually had a different truck when first delivered. The truck had an airbag in place of the center spring. Apparently the airbag design didn’t work out since they were changed pretty quickly.

The roof Superliner I on top, Superliner II on bottom: Superliner I cars have a two panel roof with a seam down the middle while Superliner II cars have a three panel roof.

Sorry for the first image quality, but it was the best I could find that sort of shows the center seam line on a Superliner I roof. End doors Superliner I on top, Superliner II on bottom: Superliner II cars have an offset top “press” button on the end doors when compared to Superliner I top “press” buttons.

Entrance door lights Superliner II cars have a pair of door lights on either side of the lower entrance doors. Superliner I cars do not have this safety feature.

Train car number readouts Superliner I on top, Superliner II on bottom Superliner I train car number readouts are stencil numbers that are back lit. Superliner II train car number readouts are digital displays.

Superliner I phase II car number plate Phase II paint on top, phase IVb paint on bottom Superliner I cars were delivered in phase II paint. The car numbers were displayed on a small metal plate in line with the upper windows on either end of the car. When Amtrak changed to phase III paint, the car numbers moved to the center white stripe, but the metal number plates (sans numbers) remained. These metal number plates still remain on the current phase IVb paint. Superliner II cars never had this metal number plate. Note the small metal plate in these photos:

Brake/Door position indicator light tubes When first delivered, Superliner I cars had three light indicator tubes. After some time, the bottom one was removed. I’m not sure why or when, but they seem to have been removed shortly before the Superliner II cars arrived (1994). Superliner II cars only have two indicator lights. The light colors display (from the top to bottom) amber, green, and white. They indicate if the cars brakes are applied and/or if the side entrance doors are open or closed. Amber = door opened and/or brakes applied. Green = door closed and/or brakes released. White was a brake test of some sort. I kind of forget since it is no longer used. Note the third light tube in the first photo, removed lower light tube in the second photo, Superliner II with only two light tubes in the third photo, and Superliner II showing amber aspect in the fourth photo:

I hope this post isn’t too long or confusing. But I hope it helps point out some of the easily noticeable differences between a Superliner I and II. Also if all of the photos don’t show up, try reloading the page. The image hosting site I use, ImageShack, is sometimes unreliable and I’ve found a reload of the page will display missing images. May be unreliable but it is free. Almost forgot, I did a post on another forum a while ago about Amtrak passenger car paint schemes (with an example of each). If anyone is interested here is the link: http://cs.trains.com/trccs/forums/p/83673/991605.aspx#991605

Nice info Matt The minor differences could easily be overlooked
