Layout looks great so far. You said you hate grass, does that mean no plants in the layout? Looking forward to updates.

There will be plenty of plants going in on the side yard where the railroad is headed next.

Probably won’t be much this year but that is where they will be.

Won’t be much of anything around the pond area as that is pretty congested already and we need to walk around it, if anything maybe some ground cover that doesn’t mind being stepped on.

Looks good, I like the edging ideal to hold the ballast for the track. Better cover up that pond or those fishy’s may become food for the birdy’s.

The pond stays covered with a net when we are not out there working on it.

It’s a shame, my girl & I were just talking about how we had forgotten how beautiful the pond was because all we ever see it is with a net going across it!

Just picked up 60 rail clamps, should be good to go for more building this memorial day weekend!

A few other notes:

I need more track!

I need more rail clamps!

I need more money!

Hello RI

Well I checked my lottery tickets - No Joy - So I can not help with #2 or #3.

I do have some extra used LGB straight track that could help.

How much more do you need?

Do you still have the Power Supply available?

I am about 1 hour north (Mass Pike + I-495)

I still have (1) MRC Control Master 20 available.

Not sure how much more straight track I am going to need, if you want to send me a list of what you have I will keep it in mind for when I run out!

Day 3 of the build 5/27/13

We continued on around the last bend by adding (4) more paving stones and brought both tracks around the corner onto the long straightaway.

Here is where one rail is going to continue on straight for about 40’

This section of the yard is a little hill’ish, so we had to take extra time getting the roadbed flat and as gradual of a incline as possible.

So after another long 6-hour day it was time to check our progress with my newly repaired RS3 (which still runs like crap, even with new trucks installed).

So that was about all that we got done for today. I finally have a long straightaway that I could never have on my old layout. Probably boring for those that like all the twists and turns, but I had way too many of those before!

Need to take a step back now and figure out where & how the railway is going next. We have a bit of a dip coming up as soon as we round the next bend. I do have some Aristo trestles that may come in handy and I probably will have to pick up some of the nice decorative curved wall stone to help in this area.

That’s all for now, maybe next Sunday I can add a little bit more!

Nice looking RS-3 Vincent, did you custom paint it yourself? When you say, “still runs like crap” what is it doing? My RS-3 runs very smooth and it works great for switching. Oh course I’m running on batteries and don’t have to worry about dirty track or power. BTW the railroad is looking good.

Hey Chuck, I bought the RS3 from a local hobby shop about 10 years ago.

This particular shop caters to a local HO club that models the Providence & Worcester railway, one of the members wanted to paint a G-scale engine and the P&W actually had a RS3 so that is how it became to be.

The engine never ran well from the day I purchased it (It was new, just custom painted). It would always get stuck on my old layout which had 5’ diameter curves, I just had figured it needed 8’ diameter to operate smoothly so it spent its days just being on display in my house.

When I started making plans for the new railroad I new I would be using 8’ diameter turns and decided to test the RS3…still didn’t work, just stopped as soon as it hit the curve.

A local shop I deal with ordered a new set of Aristo power trucks and installed them, it does run…sort of. It makes it through the turns but it just randomly stops! It will run fine then stop, give the engine more juice from the transformer it moves…then it will stop again.

I know it’s not my track as it has all been cleaned while we are laying it down, plus, my USAT 44tonner and my Bachmann Shay ran perfect on the same track today.

One thing we did notice is that the overall width between the wheel flanges is less on the new trucks (about 1/8th inch) as compared to the original ones.

I don’t know what to do with it, it most likely will just go back to being a display piece.

When the outer loop of track gets completed I will give it another try and see how it goes.

I’ll second both of those comments. I’m a P&W fan, but they don’t like me. When I railfan their late-night stone deliveries in Danbury they complain about me on the radio then usually call the police to report a “suspicious character lurking about the tracks in the dark”

All of my RS-3’s run great. They are 2nd Gen units. Usually run on battery but have run on track power.

Jon, you should bring them donuts. That might help.

If they weren’t such a miserable bunch I would. I know from experience it works…

4-5 years ago I was watching the local short line with the scanner on. They called me Johnny Railfan not knowing my name was Jon and thought it was derogatory. Didn’t bother me; I rather liked it. The chatter would run something like ‘there’s Johnny - we’ll be on the internet tonight’. One time they joked on the radio that I never brought coffee. I made it a point to meet up with them near a deli and brought coffee and fixin’s for the entire crew. A few months later I was invited into the cab while they did some switching. We got to be friends. One winter season (back when I had cash) I asked them what they drank and at the end of their shift Christmas week I brought each one of them a 6 pack. Next time I saw them they stopped and gave me their cab cell phone number. That eventually lead to spending an entire shift with them in the cab which is documented here in the articles section. Sadly, these guys have moved on to other opportunities and I don’t have the opportunities I once did to get track side during the local run.

Here is a picture I found on line of the real RS3 that the P&W owned, I would say the person that painted mine did a pretty good job!

Sweet!

Would like for my track to have a inspection when completed!

I had to bite the bullet and buy some Aristo track today (yuck).

For Sunday I will be in the need for more 8’ diameter curve and all my local shop had left was a case of Aristo.

At least it will be used in the spot where my Aristo trestles are going…yeah, that didn’t make me feel any better!

So the case of track, 60 more rail clamps, $400 more in debt and I have the supplies I need!

Now to just get through a long day tomorrow 9am - 7pm providing a sound system for a outdoor 3-band benefit show, it’s only forecast to be 90 degrees and about the same humidity level!

"Would like for my track to have a inspection when completed!"

Just do not invite these 2 to the inspection party:

Nit-Pick-Nick (L) or Insane-Wayne ® as they DISCUSS the early

P&W paint schemes…;^)…

Stay Safe-N-Sane at the 3-band show.
