Large Scale Central

SD40Qrm Build

Oh no, Sean knows my M.O…

Paul, I planned on switching the rear housings to the middle, but wanted to use USA Trains housings on the tail as I need the fully screened tops. I might revisit it yet.

I’ve had a few rainy days, so I made a little progress. The main cab has its first coat of paint, and now needs some additional filling and sanding. A lot of the frame detail is complete. Starting to look more like a locomotive.

Shane

Nice work! Looks good already.

Thanks Ray.

Hmmmmm, it must be raining again. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

I’m waiting for all the CN lighting

Looks great Shane.

wow!

Very, very nicely done, Shane… She’s a beauty… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Rooster, Northern Lights??? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Thanks Guys. Now I definitely need to take a summer break. In a few days I’ll be chasing a steam locomotive, so hopefully I’ll return with some good video.

Shane

Just a small update. After a month long wait, I finally received a shipment of 1000 13mm ( 1/2" ) test tubes. That should last me a lifetime. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Now off to the lab…………………….

Gave them a quick coat of paint and taped them in place to check them out. I think they’ll do the job. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

Shane …I was wondering if you gave up…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

What glue did you use , and how did you get such a nice cut on the glass tubes?

PS : I love watching your builds…

Pssst… I’ll bet my bottom dollar they’re plastic tubes!

The bulk shipping is a big clue…

Thanks Sean,

John nailed it. They are plastic, so I can drill out the ends for piping and mounting hardware. They have a slight taper, so the longer reservoirs need to have two similar length pieces to get the best joint. I still need to do a bit of sanding and filling on the middle joints. The scraps are being saved for a scrap gondola load. Once rusted, they’ll make nice scrap pipe. This project used 8 @ 4.5 cents = 36 cents CDN.

Sean, in furtherance of your “gave up” comment, it’s more of a squirrel factor. My hobby room is full of squirrels, and I am easily distracted. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

I have bases and hardware ready to start 3 more sd60f’s. I cut one extra base which might become a CP SD40-2f, but that one is very low on my list.

I have some preliminary work done on an SD40-2w. ( Don’t tell Chris that I stole his long hood when he wasn’t looking. ) Currently rebuilding the DB section with Aristocraft venting. This one will be a good running mate for the SD40Qrm in Road Switcher service. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

I have about 5 rolling stock items in varying states of conversion, and have plans for many more locomotive conversions. ( I stocked up on equipment before I retired. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif))

Shane

Ha ha…even though I knew better I still turned around to check on my hood! I had looked at the grills, but really haven’t got that far yet…

That explains a lot …

can wait to see the rolling stock conversions!!!

SQUIRREL!!..……………………Oh, it’s just Sean. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

John, if I’m not careful, I’ll have a dozen threads of unfinished projects. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)Two of the simpler mods are almost complete, and have actually shown up in a couple videos.

I’ve been experimenting with mounting brackets for the SD40Qrm air reservoirs. The center of the three has a little more detail added. I think with a little more detail, they’ll work.

Shane

Getting close…….

Shane, it looks fantastic now… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
