Elevated Benchwork?

Ric, it’s all chicken wire to some of us out here in the mountains, or maybe that’s just what my dad called it.

The hexagon-shaped stuff you’re talking about my Home Depot calls “Poultry Netting” wherever that phrase comes from.

Oh well!

We must be politically correct, mustn’t we? Calling it “Chicken Wire” alienates Turkeys, Pigeons, Etc, Etc. And we don’t want to offend anyone, do we now? LOL

Just so I can stay in the discussion I have to add.

Hardware Cloth is the correct name for wire netting that usually comes in rolls 2 or 3 foot wide.

The hole pattern size can range from 1/4" sq, 1/2" sq, 1/2 by 1" rectangle, and 1" sq. It may come in other custom sizes as well. Locally it is also called "rabbit wire’ because of its in rabbit hutch construction. Another common but incorrect term is “vent screen” I have also heard it referred to as “bird screen”. Lots of different names for the same material, gotta love the English language.

I won’t even get into the "Poultry netting controversy:)

John,

I use 12 inch centers on my framing because there is no “ladder road bed” to support the track. That limits the opening that the track has to span to 10 1/2 inches. This can be shrunk even more by turning every other cross member flat.

Rick

Hardware cloth also comes in 48 inch wide rolls, too. Ain’t it grand?

Okay, so I’m thinking “welded hardware cloth” of minimal 1/4 inch hole size is what is being used.

That’s what I’ve always heard it referred as and what I have always asked for. At Decks Hardware, in Ambler, Pa., they know what I want when I ask for Hardware Cloth. At Home Depot and Lowes, they look at me like I have three heads.

In LGB’s book, “The World of LGB”, they have a photo of raised benchwork. In the photo, Hardware Cloth is used.

Home Depot has it on their web site.

It looks something like this…

And makes half-decent windows…

Yes, welded wire cloth, “Hardware Cloth” is what I use on the bench tops. I use the 1/2 inch sq pattern, like Bruce shows in his post. Like Bruce, I have also used it for window mullions in 1/2 by 1/2 and 1/2 by 1" patterns.

We used to keep several rolls of different widths and patterns and materials in stock in the sheet metal shop for use in construction of vents and screens as well as for retail sales.

Here is a link to the company we use to buy from in case any one has an insatiable curiosity about hardware cloth.

I have also used that size hardware clothe for making windows. Looks good.

Oh fer goodness sake, I understand now.

I pictured hardware cloth as the sheets of black moisture barrier material used in construction. So I searched for “hardware cloth” to see where I could buy some and found all kinds of sources for it…and I also discovered (Ha!) that what you’re talking about when you say hardware cloth is what out here we call Chicken Wire!

Thanks.

p.s. not to be confused with the octagonally-shaped chicken wire which Home Depot calls Poultry Netting! Oh well.

If it’s any comfort, John, I call it Chicken Wire as well. That’s because I first heard of it in M.R. magazines when I was a kid, about a hundred years ago. Of course, when I go out to buy some of it nobody has a clue what I’m talking about any more. But it’ll always be Chicken Wire to me.

Hardware cloth!!! I say give the old geezers a break. And Poultry Mesh??? That’s just too darn politically correct.

From a Roosters perspective it’s all Nazi wire!

Dang…this IS interesting. But, to me, THIS is chicken wire…

And…this is rooster wire…

LOL!

Ric, yes to your post, except the size is likely 1/2"x1/2".

But getting back to table top applications, Hardware cloth, (welded squares) is far superior to octagonal chicken wire that will stretch, sag, and let the weed block cloth bulge down in to the large holes inviting some tearing and loss of ballast. Another tip, HC is tough to cut and it may be easier to match the framing to the width of the HC. My TT is 24” inside PT2x6’s on edge w/ PT2x4’s cross wise every 16”. Laying 24” HC was a snap, especially w/a pneumatic stapler. No ledger needed on 2x6, just tipped stapler over and nailed to the face of the 2x6.
