East Broad Top Work Wekend

Wow thanks John! I’ve been wondering how that was going. That’s really good progress considering most of the tops of the rafters needed replaced before the new tin could go down. Don’t worry guys. I have it on good authourty that they will be coating it all in tar once some of the sheen wears off.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Don’t forget a case of salt for the pealing paint look.

Nice updating Randy

Sorry for the lack of updates friends! I’ve just been more busy doing than posting. Just got back from a great session this last weekend and here are some progress shots:

First up, New siding installed on the west wall of the foundry. We are planning to squeeze in a quick coat of paint before the reunion in October. It was just too wet to paint during the weekend.

New Foundry Siding

Here is a shoot of the South wall of the black smith shop. All of the windows in it have been repaired. I spent a good deal of time up on a ladder getting the siding just under each top window replaced and then got it all coated with a fresh coat of paint.

This picture shows the now finished roof end of combine 14. As always work is slow but steady. Lots of fine wood work to be done.

Combine 14 finished roof end

Box Car 955 restoration is really showing it’s progress. With a good roof now above, one whole end has been repaired and painted inside and out.

Car 955 Progressing

This last photo shows some old roofing being removed to finish off this years work week project of replacing the west roof of the car shop. This was a huge and very needed undertaking made possible by a very generous donation.

Car shop roof finishing

Stop back tomorrow night because I am going to post part tow of this work session which was a huge treat and any EBT fan will want to see!

Interesting pics. On that steel box car, is the roof galvanized metal?

Hey Ray, Good question. The substructure is completely wood and I believe you are correct that it is covered with tin or Galvanized tin. I will confirm for sure though. I can take some pictures of the interior in October if you’re interested.

Does the box car have a paneled roof like a murphy roof?

Hey Dave, not sure what the construction of a murphy roof is. I’ll get the scoop though.

As promised. A treat, rare and illusive footage of M1 Running…

The ok was given to get M1 out since it had been almost three years since she ran. None but the owner and the fellow in charge of engine maintenance knew that this was going to happen. That’s one of the benefits of being there for work weekends. If it’s going to happen it more than likely will happen then. It was a very cool thing to witness.

Nice. She sounds as good as ever. Glad Courtney got permission to exercise her. I would be a shame if it was left too long without firing.

Randy,

Read this thread…

Murphy Roof

These are EBT box car roofs. The car in the foreground is a steel boxcar, the one in the back is a wood box car.

Thats certainly a metal roof. But NOT a “Murphy” roof as we know it out west. I don’t think that the D&RGW was the only one to use murphys’, I thought that they were pretty universal, I’ll have to check it out.

Oh, the horrors, posting a link a second time. Shall we hang him in the morning, Joe, or just drum him out of the Corps?

Perhaps, we should give him a pistol with one bullet, and insist that he do the honorable thing for his crime.

Not my own pistol, I might shoot myself

You decide. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Guys guys. Lets not railroad him. Maybe he just needs trained. No need to go off the rails about this.

I like that stone house in the first video. Anyone have pics of it?
