Large Scale Central

A viaduct for the J&B RR

For me, the best part of having a 3D printer is that there are a lot of folks that bought one and are just trying to find “anything” to do with it. Thus there are lots of items already available to be printed. Some might need a little scaling, but there’s alot done. Which is very good for me as I don’t do well with the design tools.(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Wow. It may be cooler, but the humidity is so high that it feels just as hot and miserable as the other day.

Time to get cutting those arches…

That’s a test piece on the floor to the right. I seemed to get worse the more I cut. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

But, the pieces are pretty darn close to each other, so that’s a good sign…I hope.

And done with the other side…

That test piece just won’t go away! (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif)

Once everything is cut, it’s time for the “feet”. These will be spacers that the 2x6 will rest on. They are glued and screwed in place. (Although here they are just sitting around waiting for something to happen.)

And the first section is complete - wll at least as far as the “feet/spacers” go.

Too quick on the shutter - I get a lousy picture of the two sections being assembled.

I’m using the 2x6 to help keep things straight while I put the two sections together.

Back in the correct orientation - that 2x6 is just keeping it straight and is not yet attached to anything.

It IS sturdy enough to walk on!

Here’s a shot without the 2x6…

That’s enough for today - I’m drenched.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif)

OK, so that looks real good… Nice work, Bruce… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I can feel your pain, Bruce… You could move to Preskitt… Humidity right now is 10% Yup, that’s ten percent…

Temp is 91… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

I can relate. I spent some time at Ft. Huachuca one summer, but I think it was hotter and drier. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

nice work Bruce(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

This link points to a page with no price. I suspect it is because that page also says that product is discontinued.

Once again Home Disappointment lives up to it’s high standards.

Lowe’s has sheets of that stuff too. At least the one here does. I am wondering what kind of mischief I can get into with that stuff.

I may just be adding to the confusion here, but I think we may be talking about two different things. I don’t believe the PVC board sold at HD or Lowe’s is the same as the Sintra that Ray Dunakin, for example, uses. There is a product sold at Big Orange that I get sometimes called Formular made by Owens-Corning. Baby Blue has the equivalent made by another company.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Owens-Corning-FOAMULAR-150-1-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-R-5-Scored-Square-Edge-Insulating-Sheathing-20WE/207179253?MERCH=REC--PIPHorizontal1_rr--203553730--207179253--N

Sintra is also known as Komatex. I get mine at TAP Plastics, a local chain in the Bay Area.

https://www.tapplastics.com/product/plastics/plastic_sheets_rolls/foamed_pvc_sheets/342

Gregory’s board is 1" thick.

Most of the Expanded PVC I’ve heard about was 1/2" thick and I googled Expanded PVC.

Bruce said; “I am making the sides out of 3/8” Sintec (foamed PVC sheet). They will be 7" high, so I need to cut them to size first. The PVC is 24" x 48" long."

Plus we get a new term Foamed PVC!

What’s to cornfuze?

It’s called a lot of different things and comes in various sizes and thicknesses. Who knows, they may be all different. I’ve ordered from Tap Plastics as well as Eplastic and even Amazon! They all seem the same to me, but what do I know???

One real plus is that you can EASILY get custom cuts from Russ Miller at Tap Plastics. I had him cut acrylic to size for several of my projects (TAP sells more than just Komatex!)

I know Russ is busy today with an open house but maybe he could weigh in soon. BTW, I also bought Formular in half-inch thicknesses, as well.

Greg

One difference I found on the label, the Foamular is Extruded Polystyrene, while the other I brought up was Expanded PVC.

My dog tugged at the leash to remind me; my only attempt to use a plastic board failed.

Good luck.

Dilemma time.

Well, it’s probably ALWAYS that time, but I’ve started thinking a bit more.

My initial thought was to bend some 3mm thick sheet to form the inside of the arch.

On the plus side, this would form a very nice interior shape for the arch and look good. Problems would be getting it to the correct shape and also probably causing some issues with ventilation. Although I COULD put some vents in it.

On the negative side, it wouldn’t look as nice. Right now, you can see the treated lumber…if you look closely.

Or, I could just glue some pieces to the treated lumber and paint them. Yes, all of this will be painted.

But, if I go out and look at it, is IT REALLY NOTICABLE???

I still plan to put some pvc “feet” under each base, but I wonder if it’s really necessary, or noticable, to “frame” the arches???

Thoughts? Opinions? Warnings? Threats?
