Matchstick marvels!

This guy builds huge, scale models using only matchsticks:

Whoa! OD and I were just amazed!

I will never again complain that something is tedious! Wowsers!

Dang! Amazing!

Older daughter, Julie, had a science project senior HS year to build a model bridge from toothpicks that would support 1 kg weight on its deck. Parents were encouraged to help. (And I probably should mention that this was about 28 years ago.) I used brass channel stock for forms. Staggered the toothpicks into the forms until they were snug, and poured in copious amounts of Elmer’s glue. We allowed several days for the glue to set really well. This made laminated toothpick “beams” that were quite strong. The finished bridge held the 1 kg weight with ease. More weight was added in class until the bridge made a cracking noise with 1.5 kg on it. Just goes to show that small pieces of wood and Elmer’s can build into a fairly robust structure. Of course, our bridge was not elegant, but it was strong.

Wonderfully different strokes for wonderfully talented people… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

now that was a real inspiring display of matchsticks, I did a woodworking trade show with him in OKC a few weeks after the bombing, a very interesting guy
