1:25 Cathedral

I’m at a trade show all week (IAAPA), and a certain display really amazed me. It’s a 1:25 scale cathedral (St Johns, in Holland).

The builder was there, and he told me it was 1:25 scale. We had a bit of language barrier, but I understand the details are not 3d printed, but cast.

Much of his work is intended for outdoor environments. Here’s his gallery.

It’s the kinda thing where the closer you look, the more there is to see. My mind was blown.

What’s the big deal, Cliff? Heck, I could model this easy…as a matter of fact, if you must know, I was planning this for my challenge project.

This is a model by the same buy, BTW. But I’m suspicious. He must have a hundred people working for him to produce such an amount of enormous models. I’ll ask him tomorrow…

And how do ya ship/travel with an exhibit piece that large ?

Did he design the bldg modular, or is it being displaying on the bottom of the container, to ship the bldg as a whole ?

Holy cow! It seems like just one of those structures would take most of a lifetime to model. Yet, he has many different structures. Sure this couldn’t all be the work of just one guy??

I’ll try to distill y’alls (great) questions into an email that I can bring up with the guy tomorrow. His booth is only 150 feet from ours.

  • How did you do your stained glass?
  • How did you transport this model? In modular form, or as a whole, on a platform?
  • Did you create all these works on your own, or do you have a staff of workers who create them?

I’ll email this to myself, and try to have a chat with him tomorrow.

I just spoke with the man, and regarding rhe cathedral, 38 people spent 14 months creating it. No castings or 3d printing, all carved by hand from large polyurethane block. Windows are printed photos of the real thing, behind glass.

And they have 200 employees, in Istanbul.

All their models are 1:25 scale, built for outdoor use, and have a 40 year warranty.

It would be amazing to call this guy and say something like “Build me all the buildings in downtown Thurmond, WV, in 1:20 scale” and see what he would come up with.

There are 660 little statues, all unique and hand carved.

I asked about price for a similar project, he said $500k. I expected twice that.

Ya’ see hand carving is an art (and on the downturn of becoming lost) so I’m sticking with it !

You would have liked the pretty Russian woman (can I say that?) at the booth, she hand carved all the 660 statues.

Here’s why I was captivated by all this.

These folks, from Turkey, have been re-creating ancient buildings – all cultures, all in 1:25 scale; for outdoor deployment, guaranteed for 40 years.

They have built 8 independent “miniature art” parks, and the finances are really working. Latest park, with $14M in models, paid for itself with the first year’s gate revenues.

It takes 5 hours to walk through a typical park; each scene, with its audio loop, takes a few minutes to absorb.

At least one park has a large scale RR running thru it…

The US has nothing really like this, but it’s really taking shape in Europe and the Arabic countries.
