Building gallows turntable

One of my winter projects will be to build a gallows frame turntable.

I am looking for drawings so I can get started on this. Does anyone have a source?

I googled it and their sources are out of date. The search program on LSC doesn’t work on the mac!

Thanks for the help!

Brewer has a set for the turntable. http://www.brewerplans.com/structures.htm

Here you go.

Oh…, you wanted a gallows turntable. That’s very different. Never mind!

groan

I like it! A dual purpose structure for the town. Could also be used as a platform for elected officials to spout off to the townsfolk.

Useless without pics.

The photos had disappeared, take the time to read further

Doug see this

How far are you from the Orange Empire Museum? There’s one out there. Take a ride and takes some pix and measurements.

Is it still there? I took this photo in 2012. (Let me know if you want the large original - it’s quite clear and shows lots of detail.)

[Edit: So why won’t it show my attached photo? As an attached file, it works, but not as a photo.]

Doug,

This may not be exactly a full size plan for G scale, but there is enough detail here to freelance one of your own from these plans. http://on30annual.com/scratchbuild-a-gallows-turntable/

Not sure what scale you are working in, the drawings are in O scale (1:48). To go to other garden scales, blow the drawings up by the listed percentage:

1:32 = 150%

1:29 = 165%

1:24 = 200%

1:22.5 - 213%

1:20.3 = 236%

And for those in the ‘Maine 2 Footer’ scale, 1:13.7 = 350%.

I also ran across a thread in another forum referencing Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette, Nov/Dec 1989 and Jan/Feb 1990 issues, in S scale (1:64) by Al Armitage.

1:32 = 200%

1:29 = 227%

1:24 - 266%

1:22.5 = 284%

1:20.3 = 315%

1:13.7 = 467%

Note I have deliberately dropped the decimal on the percentage as most copy shops you might take the drawings to will give you a ‘deer in the headlights’ look if you start giving them anything other than whole numbers.

And while digging for some kind of drawings, I ran across this forum post with some pretty detailed build information on a gallows turn table. It is for what looks like HO but the techniques might apply to, or be workable for G scale. http://modelersforum.com/scratch-building/building-a-gallows-turntable-for-the-horace-and-william-creek-r-r/

It is also with this article (published in RRL) that I built mine

Just to be different why not build a square Gallows Turntable??

Here are a couple of pictures of one I built several years ago for my railroad. Right now it is still living in a garage cabinet waiting for the new railroad building to catch up to its installation point.

It sat in a pit with a cement board bottom and uses a 6 inch Lazy Susan for the turning device. Rust and grit in the turning device wasn’t a problem as it was only out during operations.

Rick

Marty,

Very nice turntable. Pacific Coast Models used to sell one of these years ago with a very nice scale model "spider"for the lazy susan. He might be out of business now. Haven’t heard about him for years. Used to be at The Big Train Show here in Southern California (both at the Queen Mary and at the Ontario Convention Center.

I built this one based on a picture I took at the Orange Empire Museum.

Gallows turntables are my favorite kind. Maybe something about wood and cables. Those are nice models.

Wish I had a layout and ability (tools, health) to make turntables, as for me half the fun is in the making.

Here you go!

Thanks Joe. Any idea why it didn’t show?

P.S. the original file link is a very large image, showing lots of details.

The original size of the photo doesn’t matter. If it is larger than 800x600 pixels the LSC software re-sizes it to that size.

The problem was in the location code.

You entered… https://largescalecentral.com/application/modules/Ynforum/externals/scripts/download.php?f=https://largescalecentral.com/public/ynforum_attach/a8/36/02/23274_cd90.jpg?c=3c9d&fc='IMG_3727CE-gallows-sm.jpg'

What actually works is…https://largescalecentral.com/public/ynforum_attach/a8/36/02/23274_cd90.jpg

Notice this piece of code is already in what you posted, but surrounded by a lot of other crap that the LSC software didn’t like. (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
