      Building the CR&N: Part II

OK here is the second installment. It mainly discusses the yard. In order for this project to move forward two things need to happen. One is the siding on the house. That takes money and that won't be here until June. I can get it furred and insulated and maybe vapor barriered but the siding will have to wait. The other thing is the cement for the yard bench and cabinet. That is part of an extensive patio the wife and I have wanted for years. So I will be needing a lot of cement. I can move dirt and form it up in the meantime.

Finals week until Friday this week plus a side rod for the 2-6-0 are the top priorities. Saturday I will be with the club at a garden show. Then the following weekend Steve and I will be on a model train adventure in Western Washington.  After that i will be diving in full force on finish the prep work.

Oh and for some reason it just hit me that I am building a little engine for tight curves. There is some real potential down the road to add a true mining rr to this layout.

Yesterday, after finally getting my electrical problem sorted out in my house, I got around to finding the lid to my septic tank which I knew was going to be close to being in the way of wither the patio or the yard. Its close but it will fit. The slab might be over the tank itself a bit but the lid will be free and clear. If I have to dig out the whole tank a little concrete will be the least of my worries.

So after this weekend in western WA I will start on leveling ground and forming for concrete in the patio and the yard.

I have a plan of attack. I have next week off for a vacation. I have to have a car fixed after minor accident and they want it for 10 days. We really can't be without a vehicle that long so I took a week off to ease that issue. But what I plan to do is start forming and pouring the slabs.

I found the septic lid as I mentioned and I have a piece of 24" sewer pipe and a concrete lid that I am going to put over it so that it is easier to access. I will bury that about 6-8" deep. The concrete patio and slab for the yard will miss it. the area around it will be crushed gavel. I will get this buried and then start forming up the first slab. So progress should be made next week in getting the cement poured.

I am working on it people. . .geez. I mean I have torn down the play area, cleaned up a big mess, dug a 2 1/2-3 foot 24" diameter hole in my yard and its still May. I wish I had a magic wand I could wave and it would be done, but I haven't bought that yet. I guess i should take a picture of the septic tank lid for you guys. Your like vultures waiting for something to die. Give it time. . .I will die soon enough. . .and you will be able to feed off of me.

Blablablabla, get her done boy, quit making excuses.  BTW you haven't come by to get your engine carrier parts yet.  I know, just another project.  LOL.  Hey since you already like digging, my septic tank needs to be pumped this summer too.  Need another project?

Devon, you put the deadline on yourself. If you don't keep moving, you will be pulling all nighters the week before the grand tour, just so that you have something. And it will not be the something you want.

You keep getting sidelined by other things, rail trucks, small steam locomotives, cool buildings and such. You are loosing your focus, and I am merely trying to help you regain your focus.

As for the magic wand. I have one, but the batteries died in it, and I can't find any replacement batteries for it. But it was a problematic thing when the batteries were fresh. Magic wands tend to take things a bit too literal.

Speaking of vague concepts. . .focus is completely foreign to me. I did set the deadline and it is over a year a way. . .oh wait crap its only a year away.

Well believe it or not I have not lost focus on the layout. I am in a bit of a holding pattern trying to get ready for this weekend. But I am ready. The loco is ready, my homework is done for the week, so Steve and I can have fun and I wont have to worry. Then next week I will be able to begin in earnest. I have the week off so I will start moving dirt and leveling, setting some railroad ties that will be the flower bed edges and forming up the first pour. I will also buy some wood to cut the furing strips for the siding. Then hopefully when pay day rolls around I will be able to get some cement and fire up the mixer and pour at least the first of three slabs. We will see how far I get.

The siding will put me in another holding pattern. Thats a major expense that will have to wait until my funding comes through. Once that happens I will be able to buy all the materials and steady progress can be made. Deadlines. . .well I would like to have all the ladder in and much if not all of the track by end of this fall. The next year I can landscape and focus on being ready to host the grand opening party.

Wonder if I can get Fred to ship me a case of Railslider for the event?

Devon, yes, those of us with ADHD can have a difficult time staying focused. When I was in grade school, Sister Mary Bruno didn't understand attention deficit disorder, nor dyslexia, she just labeled me lazy, and her "cure" for that, was to slap my hands with a yardstick.

Devon we are in this together, and we are pulling for you. Now get to work!
