In another thread I said I was now the proud owner of a new old stock 10 wheeler. After a minor debate ( o i know right that would never happen on LSC) it was determined that this is a 25 or so year old 1st gen radio controlled 10 wheeler. It was purchased of eBay for 33 dollars with local pick up. I bought it mainly for the cars and the tender for bashing. The track I will use for a shelf display. The loco will be a bash or as some have suggested a rust pile in a ravine or a play ground for scale kids. But being new I figured I will run it if I can until it breaks.

So I get this thing. Local train guy seemed nice. Says it was his dad’s. I get it home. Not new. Box has been opened caboose missing as well as all the signs telephone poles crossing arms and coal tower. Working with the seller to make it right. All I care about is the caboose. It has definitely never been run. All in all I am still happy with the purchase even if I never see a caboose.

Now I set it up. Bought some battery’s and guess what. No one can give me crap ever again about anything. I am now the proud owner of a working locomotive, running on my own layout, and its even a round round to make my badge more than honorary.

So for the review. I don’t know why Bachmann would have ever changed this fine machine. It has more power than anyone could ever want. It will pull at least a hundred cars up a 10% grade with no derailments on even the worst track. I am pretty sure I could remove a section of track and it would likely traverse the gap and climb back into the rails and still not derail. The RC control is far better than anything else I have seen anyone use. Very fine control. The sound almost scared me I thought a real steam locomotive was driving through my dining room. The track is so good that I am sure that even being plastic it would run the finest DCC system, I mean it’s that good.

At any rate this is the best 30 dollars I have ever spent.

Steve, I have a feeling we are past exaggeration, beyond story telling, and full on into blatant fabrication. But I could be wrong.

If you liked that one, you owe it to yourself to check out NewBright’s excellent line of G-scale trains. Just when you think the bar of quality can’t be raised any more, they outdo themselves. My latest acquisition from them has Santa and an elf on a handcar. (Yeah! The elf, too. Not just Santa.) You just can’t beat that. Anywhere!

Okay, in all seriousness, congrats on the new acquisition. Despite all we joke about it, our 1st-generation Big Hauler did pretty well for us. I did replace the plastic wheels with metal ones once they became available (had to have some excuse to drive to Philly), and we used it in pusher service going up the steep 5% grade on my dad’s railroad. It was still working (though long-unused) when we rebuilt it as a 2-8-0 using a BBT chassis dad picked up in a swap. (I say “rebuilt,” but the only thing that survived from the original loco was the cab, pilot, and tender.)

The thing is a piece of poop. Mainly because remote is very sketchy. When I finally stopped playing with it it only went forward regardless of the sliders position. Lol. It was fun. I’ll try to get the video up tomorrow

“A battery powered Big Hauler, used just once in mint condition inside original box with cars, is in storage for future sale to collectors,” proclaims my bro-in-law. Devon’s story got my curiosity: Anyone seen a first-edition Bachmann Big Hauler priced for sale in that condition?

Around 30 bucks. That’s what mine was supposed to be and I was the only bidder at 32.95.

Wendell, I doubt that it will ever be worth much more then $30, but then again, I have seen stranger things on Ebay.
