Large Scale Central

RCS for tight places?

Tony,

I need an R/C install for my lil’ gas-mechanical switcher.

The space available is 2.5" long x 1.25" wide x 1.37" high. The measurements are pretty much the max available and ideally there should be at least a wee mite of slack.

The engine is brass and the motor is located underneath along with a toggle switch which controls forward, backwards and center off. There is no speed control. Power is supplied by a 9 volt battery.

What I need is a battery pack of at least 9volts (your 9.6 would probably work if it’ll fit) but preferably closer to 12 volts and connectors for easy removing for charging and a receiver for speed control all of which to fit the designated space. Additionally I’d need a simple charger and a transmitter with instructions written with an electronics dummy in mind.

I can do without sound or fancy features except the engine does have a working headlight that I’d like to keep. Can you fix me up?

email: [email protected] I’ll send you my phone number also after hearing from you.

Miss our old chat days Tony. You, me and ol’ Piute.

Regards, Richard Smith in Port Orford, Oregon, Center of the Universe.

Richard,

Check out my thread http://www.largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/21306/bachmann-davenport-rc if you haven’t already. I used a RX-65 from Del Tang in England and 11.1 Lipo that I got from Hobby King.

Patrick

HI Richard.

Greetings from cold Moss Vale. Here for a steam up.
Thanks for the opportunity to quote an RCS item.

Missed the chats a lot. Problem was it was during my working hours. By not taking part I can leave the computer on so I can hear when E Mails come in and get on with building stuff.

I know the loco.

They run well but tended to unsolder some of the body solder joints.

There is even a bit of room under the floor. You would need to drill holes in the floor.

I have pics somewhere inside this computer. Will look them up when I get back home late on Monday.

I will get on with working out what you need.

Thank you Patrick. I will keep this in mind in case Tony can’t help me. My lil’ engine is somewhat smaller than yours I think.

Tony, Thanks for the prompt reply. I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I’ve had this engine for many years but without a speed/direction remote control it’s of little use for switching. Too, the 9 volt battery only lasts a few short minutes so I definitely need something with more amp hours.

Don’t forget that whatever you come up with it’s got to be stupi-doable for yours truly. heehee!

Richard,

Tony offers the same RX-65 and it’s programmed better. I actually tested out my Davenport last night on a friends RR and it worked great. I also used this receiver on my Bachmann rail truck. I mounted the receiver under the seat. http://www.largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/21177/bachmann-rail-truck-rcs

I think your biggest challenge is finding the right battery to work you; size, shape and chemistry. The RX-65/Alpha-3 is tiny and works great! On my Davenport and rail truck, I think I have enough room to install a Phoenix PB-8 and can be controlled by Tony’s transmitters. I bought one of his TX-7s which has 4 sound/light triggers. Last night was also my first real test of the TX-7 and so far I’ve been very pleased.

Those are some really nice conversions you did Patrick. Thanks for the links.

Thanks and your welcome. These have been my first RC installs. I do have a little cleaning up of them. I was leery of trimming wires and just wanted to get them hooked up so I could do some testing.

Tony,

Any solution yet for my installation?

Sorry to keep you waiting Richard.

I am back home now was faced with a bunch of orders. Important ones have been done.

I will get onto it later today.

Thanks for reminding me.

Richard I tried to send an E Mail but the one above does not work.

Please send me an E Mail at [email protected] and I can reply.

Email sent. I think I forgot to again include a simple charger in the email.

Thanks Richard.

I have kept the cost details off the forum. However for the interest of other potential USA customers what I cannot supply are batteries and chargers. I can actually supply batteries but they are expensive sourced here, plus they are heavy and cost a bunch to post. Mains powered chargers from Australia cannot be used in the USA. The mains plugs are different.

Batteries & chargers are readily available from Jon Bliese at Electric and Steam Model Works.
