Pretty as a portrait

Last week our friend Martha was telling Kim how she hates to have her picture taken. Kim was agreeing with her about not liking how she looked, either… and then I nebbed in. I pointed out that the problem was that they were just self-conscious, not un-attractive, and that all they needed was a photographer willing to take the time to work with, and around, their insecurities… Then I challenged them both to let me prove it. (Even though I haven’t done much portrait work in the last 15-20 years)

This is Kim’s album:

Very nice. Thanks for sharing.

Mik, that’s very nice. And you are right. Done right, a portrait or any people shot, even a candid, can look great. BTW, I am a frequent “lurker” at Strobist, a blog that espouses shooting flash fill (or just flash, period) and have become hooked on shooting people pix. Ya can buy all kinds of equipment (I love toys) and do some great things. Take a peek at the site. The guy who started it, David Hobby, used to be a photog for the Baltimore Sun, who saw the handwriting on the wall (i.e. the death of print) and retired to started this blog. I spend more time there than on MLS, heh, heh.

Why, the lassie is a mermaid!

She looks perfectly normal to me… every one of us is a miracle.

Thanks for the kind words.

Joe, this one was a candid quick shot, and yet has become one of Kim’s favorites. Part of the great thing about digital photograph is the ability to dramatically change the mood with filters long after the fact. I went through on photobucket just playing with their and picked the filter that suited the photo best.

As for the divine Ms M… she’s managed to wiggle out of my clutches… for the moment.
