Large Scale Central

Bit by the Tin Plate bug

I stumbled across a couple of neat Standard Gauge cars I couldn’t resist.

I guess they’ll be shelf queens for the imediate future. But when I find a suitable engine, I’d like to do a loop around the ceiling. I’ve always loved the tin-plate trains. Victor posts just enough about his tin-plate Marx layout to keep the fire fueled. Ralph

Nice Ralph. Im with you on Tin Plate trains. Im always looking at the pre war lionel stuff. Would love to do a layout with all tinplate trains and buildings.

The only trains that MIGHT make me give up “Large Scale”!

Standard Gauge is a large scale.
Like Shawn, I’d like to do an “O” scale tin-plate layout some time in the future.
But I’m not willing to give up my large scale

My next door neighbor was Tom Snyder. He had a huge layout taking up the entire bottom floor of his home. It took a while to catch, but he hooked me with the large-scale bug. All his stuff was tinplate, Lionel standard gauge.

It’s at a private museum in New Jersey now… (http://www.njhirailers.com/)

As time passes, I have decided that I like the retro look of a tinplate train and accessories plus Plasticville buildings for the annual “train under the tree” layout. Takes me back to my childhood of watching my prewar Lionel Torpedo freight set rush madly around the family Christmas tree while sparks shot from the drive wheels and the smell of ozone assailed my nostrils.

Best, David Meashey

ooh those are nice, I dont have room for standard gauge, all my tin stuff is O gauge 3/16 scale stuff.

McCoy. Spot the truck sideframes a mile away.
I’ve got my basement 3-rail re-lit after almost 20 years, runs just fine…no electronics.

Dave, They are McCoy. Looking for one more to complete the consist. I plan on re-trucking the McCoys to run outdoors on regular 45mm track.

Here’s a Bachmann coach for size comparison.

My two Lionel cars. I’m going to leave these Standard Gauge and hope to do a layout indoors some time in the future. These can get pretty pricey, so it will be a long process aquiring more. I picked these two up cheap. Any future purchases will have to be cheap also. Ralph

MTH sells new Standard Gauge locomotives and cars. Snyder ran the MTH’s on his layout, saving the Lionel as collector items. Saw a train show awhile back about his layout, it was neat!
