Well BD whatever you have done to help the site is working. !2/21 at 7 PM it only took 26 minutes to get on the site instead of an hour.

might it be, that there is something wrong with your pc too?

even down here, with our stoneage connections, the forum takes less than half a minute to build up.

(most of that time needed by all the google & other background programs)

    • How about a pair of Grouch Marx glasses?

I dunno. I have stopped in chat a few times, and every time I did, everyone left.

    • Would you wear one if it meant possibly preventing someone from being confronted with the virus...if not, why be so selfish....however there is no point in wearing one if you are alone looking into the camera....

Of course wearing a mask in these difficult times, is NOT something to be joked about....   This is no place to be using wearing a mask, as an attempt at humour....it represents, sick political humour....

    • Bruce, it would be most enjoyable to have you share your wisdom and talents, with a few us on the chat, if you can bear to put up with a bit of humour, and occasional intelligence...your friendship is most appreciated by those that know you...please come and share it...it is AVAILABLE....!!

    • I suspect that people will use what is available; and if it's not available, then no one will use it.

    • I used to be one of those "Stuck in the past" people, and I still hesitate to grab every gadget that some advertisement tells me I need....BUT, I did suddenly realize that for less than $30 Canadian, I could have a camera, and sound thingy, simply clipped on to my boat anchor/10 year old computer, and simply plugged in.

It has helped me to better communicate with my friends, and interest groups, without any problems, except the ones I create for myself !

I finally got to see and properly meet and enjoy many of my wonderful contacts on LSC.    And, it didn't hurt a bit...and no-one has threatened my security...but then I'm not paranoid, like some loveable old fools I know   !!!.....but then I don't do porn, or any of that stupidity.

I know we have several members here that wont won't participate in audio/video meetings.

True, and there are many here that will never get away from DC, but I read on here every day that someone is looking into DCC, or battery system control and considering a change. I can remember back in the day when I said, I'm never going to buy a computer, then people at work started talking about what there was on the internet, I had one in a weeks time.

I'm not talking about the various luddites that dont like change (we have a lot of this type!), but more the people for reasons in their personal life will NOT use audio or video chat.  There are at least a half-dozen members that I know that wont use it.

    • I have a group what uses Zoom and seems to be online 24 x 7. You do not need to be invited. just click on the link they have and it is done.

Has anyone had experience doing this?

Does it cost to make this happen?

    • @Trainman - The chat room is nothing more than a space with an open door. There is no 'schedule' per se when there will be folks in the chat room. Over time, the 7:00 to 8:00pm Eastern time has become a default.  Some members have even posted an opportunity tor morning chat time and later chat time for folks on the west coast. The effort was fruitless, therefore the member stopped.

I myself have stopped in at odd hours over the years I have been a member and sometimes there is someone in the chat, and others not. The chat is for users to 'organize' meetings, try starting a thread with an open door and a time frame. Spend a week or two sitting in chat for half an hour and see who shows up. If no one knows you are there, it is a total 'crap shoot' whether anyone will show up.

As for video chat, there are a couple options available. Zoom has been mentioned, however this medium is by invitation and MUST be SCHEDULED ahead of hand. There is also a limit on time for the free application, 45 minutes I believe. Not impossible, but not practical for impromptu gatherings like chat.  Google Meet is another. This medium is more flexible in that the 'host' of the video chat can post in the chat room a link to the video chat. Those who wish to join the video chat can, those who do not can continue to chat in the chat room. The video link is only good as long as the initial video chat is open. Once all the folks have exited the video chat have left the chat, the link will die.

      My tuppence on chat.

    • Looking good, Bob.  And like John, I really appreciate all the hard work you are putting into the new software.  I wish there was something we could all do to help with the transition ...... well, one thing we can do to assist is simply be patient, change can be frustrating and it will take some time to get all the kinks worked out.  Again, many thanks for all you do for us over grown kids

The sneak peak looks fantastic, Bob, very nice, very clean and organized...and, honest to God, you have no idea how much I appreciate all the work you're doing on this. Appreciate isn't really good enough to express it.

         Thank you!

Time for another sneak peek.  I have been working on the importer most of this weekend.  I have the member importer and the forum category importer working, and I just started working on the topics and posts.  Topics seems to be right.  Here's what the new site looks like with topics (but no posts yet)

Vic, in a million years I wouldn't presume to suggest what you should do, but I believe Bob McCown himself uses Imgur to host his pictures. It might be a possiblity, I don't know.

I'd like to offer my 2 cents, as I just loaded a bunch of pics to the Freightsheds and got a big notice saying "BEWARE" or similar. I am not concerned about losing my FS space - I have backups of my files going back to 2005. The threads may be useless, but Jim gave us a PDF solution for any threads we may think could be useful.

Firstly, while I am sure Imgur works for some people, and may be the best option around, it isn't any less work that the FS. You still have to upload the photo (and drag-and-drop doesn't save any time if you have to go find the photo in the first place.) Then you have to paste the URL in the LSC Image box. Doesn't seem to make much difference.  Maybe the thing I am missing (being an old-school laptop guy,) is that you can upload photos to Imgur directly on your phone? So you always upload a max-size photo, even if you are only going to post it on a webpage? I try to avoid wasting that much space.

In 10+ years of posting on various forums, I can assure you that Imgur will go away sometime, and those threads will go blank. It's the way of the world.

The new MLS forum software, and Gscalecentral.net (seem to be the same forum software,) have the neat drag-and-drop directly in to a thread, which we can't do on LSC yet. That's a nice feature, and the forum software then stores the pic for you - no messing about with uploads and URLs.
