REA Flat with REA Car

OK Guys, now you can comment. . . I am not trying to sell this one.

This was a homemade scratch-built flatcar with a load that I found on facebook and it arrived via ECLSTS. The trucks were standard Aristo with plastic wheels. There were a few problems - trucks too far from the ends and the car was too high on the bolsters. Details were lacking.

As I was visiting the Woodland Railway for their ops session, I decided to do some quick clean-up work. I added new bolsters 1/2" closer to the ends, painted and fitted some aristo metal wheels, added corner plates and strap steps, and a pawl and ratchet for the brake. The underside got truss rods and dummy turn-buckles. I shortened the coupler mount, but left on the LGB coupler as I planned to run with a loco similarly fitted. As it is going to be used in my UK trains, I also added some leftover Aster buffers and a coupling hook (pls ignore them.)

And here’s how it turned out.

Finally, we ran as a special on the Woodland Rwy that following weekend, behind the Wisbech & Upwell tram (commonly known as Toby.)

I still need to add more details, but it is starting to look like a flatcar.

nice

Nifty car and Hot rod.

REA ran flat cars in England with a Bugatti as a load?

How is that 55 gallon drum not falling off the car? It needs some blocking. I like how you improved the car.

You guys are brutal, this is supposed to be a fun hobby (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)

A short film about the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway, A small diesel is hauling the consist:

Sadly this quaint line had ceased operation when I got to visit the area. However, as the roads were not, in 1980, very busy I was able to slowly drive close to much of the former route and make frequent stops. It was a good experience as I was able to imagine what it would have been like when the train ran.

Actually, its an Alfa Romeo - Bugatti’s have a proper arch radiator - and it’s probably 1/18th scale. And yes, the boss of REA needed his private racecar moved by Railway Express.

True. That should be my next detail task. Would it be tied down with rope or just trapped with some bits of wood?
I was also thinking I had some stake pockets, but no sign. What else does it need?

If it was lying down it would probably rest in a cradle. Standing up probably just strapped down.

What else does it need?

Couple of spare tires, small toolbox maybe. As it is, it looks pretty damn kewl to me…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I’d make a wooden rack with half circles to hold the drum.

Pop in a spigot and add a hose, to refuel the speedster while it’s on the ground. Gravity feed.

I’m trying to be gentle, yikes!(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-yell.gif)

Thought we were having fun? Perhaps you would like to enlighten Pete with some of your knowledge!

BTW if your not finished with that grapefruit we could quarter it up and pass it around.

Thought we were having fun?

Now that’s a classic for misunderstanding. Impossible to tell if you are being sarcastic,**(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif) asking a question, *(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)*or making a statement.
