      Jan and Ric's Great Adventure - 2018

Happy New Year as 2018 begins.  The Kaskaskia Valley Railway crew finds their bunkhouse in Dundee, Florida at the tracks of the Ridge Live Steamers.  Our plans are to be here through most of March and enjoy the events of the 7.5 gauge, 1.5 inch scale railroad world.  Jan works on her quilts and the landscaping of the railroad property.  Vegetation is something that is a continuous battle in the sub-tropics of Florida.  Stuff really grows!  The Ridge Live Steamers sits on the property of a former orange grove.  Many orange trees still exist on the property.  If they are groomed, they still produce.  If they are neglected, grasses and vines grow over and through them, creating fire hazards and a general unkept look.  It can take days to clear one tree and then if limbs are trimmed high and grass kept maintained underneath, they can exist with little maintenance.  Jan enjoys the work and the club benefits.

Most of our travels revolve around railroads and railroad events of many gauges and scales.  Recently, my endeavors are trying to improve and advance my "steam knowledge".  This is going fairly well.  I've convinced Jan, and others, that any money I spend is no different than the money people spend on higher education.  Each steam engine purchase is like paying for a semester of college.  Parts are like buying books and supplies.  No clues, if I'll ever get a degree.

However, this theory is actually working as I attempt to advance my knowledge.

      The "Adventure" continues.

Its minus 4 in Carlyle.  My son, the marine and hunter, even has enough sense to stay inside.

We don't talk about the temperature, where we are.  It seems to just upset people.

Glad to hear your adventures are filling your retirement days. I can't say I'm not envious.  I do hope that our paths will cross once again this year, either in the Finger Lakes or Massachusetts. My goal for early spring is to do the repairs needed to my Envoy to allow me to tow the camper with confidence and without overheating. Right now its been parked since late summer of 2016.

Wishing a wonder filled New Year for you and Jan.

Well we missed hooking up with you in Dundee just to many things to do when we go to Valrico, FL.  Hope to meet up again one day.  We are shooting to go to FL again in March to Lazy Days campers just out side Tampa for a rally.  Might see if I can work something out.  Later RJD

      Uncle Ric and Aunt Jan

I hope 2018 adventures pans out well for you both!  Remember...to drink lots of alcohol and slam stuff like a screen door during a Texas tornado with no repercussions. Why? because you are "married" and both retired.  SLAM AWAY my friend and enjoy the travels in 2018 !

13 March, 2018 - Tonight we are in Troy, Alabama.  We left Dundee, Florida and the Ridge Live Steamers track this morning.  We finished the last Car Cards/Waybills Ops for the year on Sunday and it is time to head north.

Our son, reports the Kaskaskia River, below the dam, is full of Pelicans.  If they are going north, so are we.

34 degrees in Troy, Alabama tonight.  Pelicans are smart, right?

Spring begins in about a week.  Time to get home and start the local fun.

When you slam the door they fly, unless the fishing is really good.  If its really good, there ears are below the water level and they are very busy.

Spring and Fall are very nice in Southern Illinois.  Trying to think about other great things about Illinois, my Mom, kids and grandkids are there.  Yep, that's what I can say.

      16 March, 2018 - Friday

We made it back to Carlyle, yesterday afternoon.  All is well.

      .

Plans are underway for future adventures, but first we must do the family duties and act like "Homesteaders".

      .

Weather is a little brisk, so inside endeavors are the plans.  Lots to work on with the 1/8 live steam, 1:20.3 Timesaver and the HO Switching Puzzles, plus HO Ops on Friday nights and Bluestone Southern OPs fast approaching.

      .

Having serious withdrawal about not going to York, but the Trainmaster has spoken.

      .
