Somebody has to wake Dave up!  He's still hibernating from the last one.

Maybe Dave needs a break this year with supplying materials. So I'm suggesting you guys supply the materials yourself. Perhaps Mik would think the same way from his posts that I remember.

4- 8d framing nails (may be cut and used however you wish) but you must use all 4

1- Plastic bottle of some kind (you decide)

1-Ball point Pen spring (from what ever pen you care to disassemble)

1- piece of change you found under your couch cushions (or wherever you found it ) the piece of change must be included!

This is the spirit of MIK or Allen or Kim reversed ....now build what you like but these materials must be included and documented!

Extra points if you paint it on the washer and dryer with a broom

Uh....this suggestion sounds like the kind of thing that forced the English defense minister to resign and something that could get any one of us fired from our day jobs.

I think Rooster has a great idea there. Put all that junk on the table and stare at it until something jumps out and gets built.  I especially like the bonus points.

But what if we are still staring at it in March? Actually I do like the idea!

      HEY, DAVE!  do you agree?

(if you don't answer, we have to take that as a "yes".)

We could relieve Dave and do a 'Design by Committee' build this year.  By January lets get a list of those who are going to participate in the 2018 challenge put together. By the end of January each member has to submit 1 common item that can easily be sourced by all participants.  (The item has to make sense, no dryer lint or orange peels).  By the end of February each participant has to source all the items and the build begins in March.   You can add whatever else you want, as long as it doesn't cost an additional $30 over the cost of the other items.  As always, anything already on hand is free use.  We could choose a category, or leave it open and just state whatever you build has to use all of the committee chosen items.

      What do you guys think?

      Chris

I am open to this idea for sure. I still think a toilet paper roll would be an interesting object.

      Looks a lot like this:

      More "explained" here:

Now, why do nails use a "penny" designation?

The "penny" system was a traditional way of sizing nails. The larger the number, the larger the nail. Penny designations originated in fifteenth-century England; the abbreviation "d" — from Rome's penny, the denarius — meant penny or pence. But the derivation of the system is unclear. One explanation — that so many nails could be purchased for a penny — seems wrong; that means 60d spikes would be cheaper than 2d (1-inch) brads. D may have indicated the price per 100 nails of a given length, thus relating cost to size. But it could also have been the price per pound. Unfortunately, neither explanation clarifies why box nails are shorter than common nails of the same penny or why the increment of length is inconsistent.

      TL;DR:  Nobody really knows...

Bulk nails are still sold by the pound, I remember putting on my heavy gloves and reaching into the open barrels and grabbing handfuls to drop into the hanging scale basket.

It would add to the cost to separate to count and angry clerks with bloody fingers ... well don't go there.

Number of Nails per Pound by Type
      Size Common Box Finish
      4D    315     450    600
      6D    190     225    300
      8D    105     140    200
      10D   70        90    120
      12D   50        70      90

on another post Dave says he has an idea for the challenge and is amassing the stuff needed. Better make sure he has not been working all summer to supply us with needed parts before going off on yer own.

from Daves post after he went missing all summer

Looking forward .. I have plans for the 2018 Mik’s Challenge. 60 Days to go. But I do like all the things bantering about. Maybe a little of both? No Real Hints…
