Retirement Travels

Our friends in the railroad hobbies know of our “nomadic adventures” of traveling for railroad related pursuits. We also provide support duties for our son’s family’s pursuit of the “Rodeo Lifestyle” Great 3 season lifestyle of being with a strong family environment and raising young people in a very strong, wholesome, Christian, healthy, outdoor life.

It’s great fun!

This morning, we are in Monticello, Illinois. Within a mile of the Monticello Railway Museum.

I was here at the end of April with my “Operations” friend, Mark Godwin, as we chased the history of the Illinois Terminal Railroad, through the annual meeting of the Illinois Traction Society.

Today, the sun is shining and a beautiful breeze is drying the ground. Yesterday, not the same. It rained from 6am to Noon. And the Rodeo went on. Mud, slop and rain. The “Bull Riding”, “Goat Tying” and every event was entertaining, but challenging and extremely muddy. One of the professional cowboys said, “You do the events and survive. Don’t try for your fastest time, just get through it safely, without getting hurt or injuring your horse”.

Goal today is to get our rig out of here, safely. That won’t happen, until this evening. But Man, I hope this sun and wind work in our favor.

Oh yeah, yesterday, while sitting in the rain, fog and mist, it was great to hear the moan of a whistle or horn as the museum equipment was running just a mile away. Sounds of a different era and time. But the western atmosphere here, fit right in.

Wait… Ric’s retired?

Not really. He’s just changed jobs, from running a marina to driving a bus…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

We got out of Monticello, Il. after the Trailblazer Saddle Club District 2, Illinois Junior Rodeo Association weekend. By Sunday afternoon the mud dried to a hard surface pounded into dust by the horses and then the pickup trucks and trailers made it quite flat for when we left.

Today, we arrived at the Texas T Campground in Lynnville, Tennessee. Tomorrow, we go to J&S RailCar up the road.

This is the home of the creation of our 7.5 gauge, 1 1/2 inch Rail Bus. Plan to be there for a couple of days for upgrades and then back in Nashville, Illinois, for Clarke’s OPs this coming weekend.

Upgraded the controller on the Rail Bus, yesterday. Headed back to Carlyle to prep for Clarke’s Ops. Fantastic weather in the Midwest.

Rooster,

Pictures show on the websites that I give you. That’s the best your going to get from me. Just too much to do and I had to give up some of this stuff to squeeze life in to the years I have left, and pictures didn’t make the top 20, let alone 10. Life is an adventure with no rewinds and no replays.

Don’t you always wonder what Rooster really wrote before he edited it? I consider it part of his therapy and I’m happy that I can help him vent. Also, glad that he edits his statements, because that allows Bob to not get involved.

Today, we move out of the Clarke’s driveway. Nice place, give it a 5 star rating. Heading back to our home campground on Carlyle Lake in the shade, to prepare for our next adventure. Friday, we leave for Lincoln’s Boyhood Home State Park in Indiana and Holiday World with both of our kids families and a week of summer fun and camping.

The Adventure continues. Shut Up Maynard!

Happy trails. Perhaps the rodeo schedule will allow an extended East Coast trip next year and we can do some camping together. I had thought seriously of trying to make the Finger Lakes dates after the Invasion as a stop-over on the way to my brothers in WNY, but the Colorado trip sucked up all the time and money. It will be a blast though.

Re pictures - Get Jan on Instagram (tell her it is for the kids and grand kids) then she can post a few pics from her phone directly o Instagram. Then; if I can figure out how to grab them from Instgram I can post a few here.

David, please accept a public apology from me to you. I really thought Rooster was making another nonsense reference to Maynard G. Krebs of Dobby Gillis fame or something. Didn’t realize he was referencing to you. He gets me in more trouble than Andy does.

I’ve forwarded this statement to Jan. Heck, I hardly know what you said.

Guy can’t take responsibility for his own actions Dad? I thought he was a family friend?

We are at the Finger Lakes Live Steamers for the Open House Weekend. Woke up to 52 degrees this morning. That temp is for anyone that wonders why we are here.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

You picked a great week to be in the area. We have had warm days and cool night with no humidity for a week. Very unusual for late June, but I’ll take it.

Today is the Finger Lakes Open House. Club members are blaming us for bringing the warmth. May hit 90 today, oh the horror. 61 degrees when we woke up. Fantastic weather.

Sounds nice Ric. Maybe we can make it in Sept after the narrow gage convenion.
