    • Passenger equipment, in the modern days, is often quite different when it comes to braking systems than freight.

           What brought this vividly to my attention a few years ago, was the inclusion in a derailment of a freight train, of a passenger car in transit between repair shop and railroad.

       It was discovered that part of the investigation, determined that the passenger car had one end of the car with its hand brakes released, while the opposite end had them applied. It seems that often, the application of the hand brakes is done separately. Each end had a separate hand brake wheel.  The railroad employee, forgot to check both ends of the car, when releasing the hand brakes.

          In most freight car brake systems, we as modellers notice, that one brake wheel controls both trucks at the same time.

      the forum owner takes certain precautions: (and in my opinion, Bob has NOT done these)

      here are SOME of the things that must be done:

      • Select and register a DMCA agent with the United States Copyright Office,
      • Publish a DMCA policy on the forum detailing how copyright owners can file complaints with you,
      • Follow the compliance steps for handling a complaint as detailed in the DMCA, and
      • Create and enforce a repeat infringer policy.



      So, it would be best if we did not post copyrighted material, for Bob's sake, but definitely for the poster!!!

    • No John, I don't think so. The subject has come up before and Bob asked folks to please not post copyrighted material on the forum. And yes, Bob is responsible as it is his forum and he controls it, therefore he is responsible for the content. He prefers us to self police, I am exercising my responsibility to self police. As I stated above, what folks do back channel or off the forum is none of my business.


      It is so easy to contact folks through the message system and swap information via email, there is no reason to jeopardize the forum. As for your comment on MLS, that is their business. Since Shad sold it I find there is little content there that I am interested in as most of the content is for the burnt finger crowd.

    • You nailed it Cliff. After reading the patent description. You are correct in that ballast is dumped with side dumps on the shoulders and then the spreader pulls it into the center and then spreads it between the rails with excess being pushed to.the shoulders again. 


      Very cool and economical design and I think with the drawings and the patent description it can be modeled. May give it a go after the challenge.

      From the bracing and the shape / orientation of the blades, I'd say the car's operational direction was toward the left. The big blades scooped the loosely-dumped gravel toward the center, and the little vee-blade toward the right spread the ballast evenly over the ties, inboard and outboard of the rails.


      If so, maybe that's the opposite of how Jordan spreaders work, with their blades acting like a plow (vs a scoop). 



      After some poking around, I found the additional patent figures; lot of detail! Would be a great model, Devon.


      The last figure shows how the gravel is scooped from outboard piles and distributed; figure 7 shows how the derrick is used to lift and stow the blades.
